Add custom formatting, keep choices-pills

Hello

I've been trying to add custom formatting-rules to my choice-columns, but every time I click:
Format this column --> Choice pills --> choose Advanced mode
and save, the choices where you can add more will turn into a text field. The format rules haven't even been modified, just saved as a JSON.

Why is this happening and what can I do to prevent it from happening again?

I've added to images to show what I mean.

@slushman you don't need to click on advanced mode. Just click choice pills then the Save button.

@slushman What "custom formatting-rules" you want to apply, additional to SharePoint default choice pills?
