Sharepoint List Colum with External Data

I would like to create a sharepoint list and define a column there. This column should contain customer names. The customer names should come from an external data source.

The external data source is an MS SQL Server on premise.

I tried to define a content data type. But I did not succeed.

@swagner what version of SharePoint are you using? One approach is to Business Connectivity Services, another is to use Flow with a Data Gateway and SQL Server connection, another is to use a tool like BCS MetaMan, https://lightningtools.com/download-a-data-integration-tool or https://www.layer2solutions.com/
