Can we extend Hero web part to read metadata of selected link/Page

I am trying to extend Hero web part. It should be able to read the meta data if a Page URL is selected.

Is this possible ?

I believe Microsoft WebParts are not open source yet so unlesss I'm mistaken you don't have a way to do that...if there were open source, you could extend them
