We provision SharePoint sites when someone needs a team site.  When looking at O365 Groups, I'm not sure I see the value.  Why and when would someone want to provision a Group vs a regular SharePoint site?  Groups lack the ability to create sub-sites, additional lists, libraries, etc.  How is Microsoft's guidance on how to position O365 Groups vs SharePoint sites?

With the latest iteration of groups when you create a group you get a full team site as well. So you get best of both worlds. Plus you can also take advantage of planner and teams if you so desire.

Hi Richard!

Every SharePoint Site Collection comes with an Office 365 Group and every Office 365 Group creates a full features SharePoint Site Collection. There are no differences between the two, in fact Groups is not a product but rather a construct.
You create a Group and it creates things in each Product to link it to that Team/Group (SharePoint, Mailbox, Calendar, Planner, Teams, etc...)

So as a Site Collection you get sub sites, additional lists and libraries.

There is no "vs." position on the two :) Hope this helps.

Every new O365 Group is getting a team site, which will give you the ability to create subsites, lists, libraries, etc.

When Shouldn't you use groups?! There's a REAL exchange Calendar (my favorite) an e-mail distribution list, OneNote, Document Library, and a mobile app. Not to mention the associated team sites.

Think about groups as the "keychain" for communication + collaboration that traverses across various collaboration and communication platforms such as Outlook (e-mail), SharePoint, Teams, Yammer.

Check out this short video from Ignite with a great overview of Groups https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uHzpbf4oIis

Great info from the AMA team... to which I also want to call out that no matter where you create a Office 365 group from (Outlook, Outlook for the web, SharePoint home, Microsoft Teams, etc), you will get a full-powered SharePoint Online modern team site - that has the power of all legacy capabilities + the new modern experiences (libraries, lists, home page, news, site contents - all have been modernized and more to come).

How can we connect an existing Group to MS Teams?

I am sure you are all getting questions about the fact that we essentially have 2 different methods for threaded message communication for O365 Groups (the old-school Exchange-based one and now Teams) and this will soon expand with Yammer connected groups. How are you guys directing customers? And is there a consideration to allow a group owner to specify that they want a Yammer enabled group instead of a Teams enabled group? Just forecasting user confusion here...

To Create a Team for existing Group, open MS Teams - Click on Create Team and you will see at the bottom of that screen an option to add a team to an existing Groups. It will display all Private Groups you are an Owner of

Surely the following is not correct...

"Every SharePoint Site Collection comes with an Office 365 Group and every Office 365 Group creates a full features SharePoint Site Collection."

I can understand if this was referring to only modern team sites, but every site collection???

Sorry for replying to this old post. But I am confused now after reading this post. Is that mean that both Office 365 group site and SharePoint team site are same?

I tried to create Web Properties in the office 365 group site and I am getting Access Denied exception. I am also trying to use the Access Request settings for Office 365 group site but I do not see the option to manually set it first of all. Is it supported for office 365 group sites? Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanking you.
