I'm not sure I see the value in the Planner tool.   We already have Microsoft Project for more complex projects.  We already have Task lists and Project sites in SharePoint.  The Task list in SharePoint allows us to define predecessors and create Gantt charts.  The Planner tool seems to be lacking a lot of features.  Sure, you can display a couple pretty charts in Planner, but I dont understand why someone would want to use that vs a regular Task list.  Am I overlooking some key features or does Microsft have better plans for this tool long-term?

One important thing about Planner is that it's more fully integrated into Office 365 via Office 365 Groups. You can have a plan per group, and have this be where you more easily, and more visually, manage team tasks - easily assign, track, manage and report. The SharePoint team, too, is working with the Planner team to have a Planner web part for use within SharePoint publishing pages and news articles - similar to what is in place today for Yammer and PowerBI level integration.

Planner is also fantastic for short/agile projects. Check out this short presentation from Ignite comparing and contrasting Project, PLanner, SharePoint https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vx1-OCTXX8Y

I like Planner for a frictionless lightweight project management / task status tool. We still use MS Project Gannt charts for major initiatives and tracking critical path etc. but for day to day tasks Planner can be good for getting a team to quickly communicate how tasks move through phases.
