Author:  Michael Cureton, Development Manager, Configuration Manager Sustaining Engineering Applies to: System Center 2012 Configuration Manager Customers using Cloud-Based Distribution Points (DPs) may have recently received a notification email from the Azure Team stating that the family 1 based guest Operating System (OS) will be retired on June 2, 2014. Cloud-Based DPs in Configuration Manager are configured to use a family 1 based guest OS and thus would be impacted by this retirement. The Azure Team has recently extended the retirement deadline until September 2, 2014. More information on the requirement notice can be found here . While customers will need to manually update the Azure guest OS for any deployed Cloud-Based DPs prior to the September retirement date, we recommend that you hold off on updating your Cloud-Based DPs until updates to Configuration Manager are released. Configuration Manager will need to be updated to create new Cloud-Based DPs using a family 2 ( Windows Server 2008 R2 ) based guest OS as well as address a race condition where the status for your Cloud-Based DPs could be set to “Performing Maintenance” indefinitely even though the Azure guest OS update has completed. These updates will be released before the September retirement date. Update: Cumulative Update 2 for System Center 2012 R2 Configuration Manager is now released. After the application of Cumulative Update 2, newly created Cloud-based distribution points will use a “Family 2” (Windows Server 2008 R2) Guest operating system. Existing Cloud-based distribution points can now be upgraded to Family 2 by using the Azure portal. In addition, the possible race condition that affects distribution point status has been resolved. This blog post will be updated when an update is released for customers using Cloud-Based DPs with System Center 2012 Configuration Manager Service Pack 1. --Michael Cureton Configuration Manager Resources Documentation Library for System Center 2012 Configuration Manager Configuration Manager 2012 Forums System Center 2012 Configuration Manager Survival Guide System Center Configuration Manager Support This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties and confers no rights.
