Microsoft Tech Community Release Notes – 26.01

We’re excited to share the latest updates to the Microsoft Tech Community!
This release focuses on improving User Group management, along with a collection of behind‑the‑scenes updates and bug fixes designed to make everyday interactions on the platform smoother and more reliable.

As always, thank you for your continued feedback — it plays a key role in shaping these improvements.

Group Hub Metadata Improvements

We’ve continued investing in User Group experiences, starting with improvements to the metadata that helps define and organize Group Hubs.

Group owners can now provide additional contextual information about their groups, making it easier for members to understand the purpose, location, and scope of a community. These enhancements also lay the groundwork for future discoverability and filtering improvements across the platform.

What’s new:

Expanded Group Hub metadata fields
Improved consistency in how group information is captured
Foundation for future enhancements to group discovery and management

Behind‑the‑Scenes Improvements

While some updates are immediately visible, many of the improvements in this release focus on reliability, usability, and polish across the platform.

Highlighted Bug Fixes

Images in replies now open full screen
Users can once again click images in replies and view them in a full‑screen experience, making it easier to review shared screenshots and visual content.
Inbox access issues resolved
We fixed an issue where some users experienced difficulty accessing their inbox, improving reliability for notifications and private messages.

Additional Improvements

In addition to the fixes above, this release includes:

Multiple accessibility improvements across key experiences
Performance and stability enhancements
Various UI and usability refinements based on community feedback

These updates may not always be visible, but they play an important role in improving day‑to‑day interactions on the Microsoft Tech Community.

Microsoft Tech Community Release Notes - 25.10 - Oct 8th, 2025

We’re excited to share the latest updates designed to improve your experience on the Microsoft Tech Community! This quarter, we’ve focused on modernising the interface, enhancing event features, and introducing new capabilities for user groups.

When you visit a Community Hub on the Microsoft Tech Community you will see the biggest visual change to the community experience, we have modernized the way you navigate each community using an updated tab style that you will find on our other sites such as the Microsoft Adoption site.

This is just the beginning of this work, with other changes looking at how we surface other relevant content, better personalization and less clicking 'see more'.

Events

We have also been listening to feedback on our events pages and we have started making changes here, including:

Its now much easier to see who is attending an event

Clicking this will show you which community members are attending.
When an event is being held on Teams, the event organizer can now display a Link to the meeting using a branded link
We have moved the Featured Guests / Speakers over to the right rail.

User Group Support

Group owners may now create their User Group hub on the Microsoft Tech Community by visiting the User Group Community Hub and clicking the Create User Group button. We have plans to enhance this offering over time and look forward to welcoming new groups to the platform. User Groups can submit feedback, bugs and feature request via our ideas board

🛠️ Bug Fixes & Optimizations

In this release we have made numerous accessibility, UI and fixes designed to improve your experience.

Microsoft Tech Community Release Notes – 12/09/24

Fixes

Fixed an issue where certain banners were not displaying for some logged-in users and browsers.
~~Custom RSS feeds that were previously deployed are now functional again (removing the repeated domain)~~ - COMING SOON
The issue with the sharing widget, where the current page and title were not consistently captured in the sharing link, has been resolved.

What's New

An RSS subscribe button has been integrated with the Share button at the board & message / article level.

Fixes

Blogs on the “All Blogs” page are now listed in chronological order from newest to oldest based on the date posted, rather than by the most recent activity.
Users with extended last names who were experiencing login difficulties are now able to login.
Enabled a community wide default sorting of comments to Newest to Oldest
Users can change their default comment sorting in My Settings, under the user avatar.
Numerous other fixes to improve performance, stability, and user experience.

Microsoft Tech Community Aurora Upgrade Notice

We are excited to announce that Microsoft Tech Community will soon undergo a major platform upgrade, known as Project Aurora. This upgrade will deliver a more streamlined architecture, more responsive user interfaces, modernized tools for easier content creation and discovery, and a more accessible and inclusive community experience.

We are excited to continue to bring the best community in tech to you and introduce innovative ways to connect, engage, and achieve more!

Key Dates:

November 4 (starting at 5:00 PM Pacific): Migration begins. All areas of Microsoft Tech Community will be unavailable during this time.

November 5: (by 5:00 AM Pacific): Migration complete. All Microsoft Tech Community access will be restored.

What to Expect: During the upgrade period (November 4^th at 5PM Pacific through November 5^th at 5AM Pacific), all areas of the Microsoft Tech Community will be offline. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding. Upon completion of our upgrade, access to all areas will be restored.

Complete Planned Maintenance : Aug 20th, 2024 - 4pm-5pm Pacific

Dear Community Members,

As part of our ongoing commitment to maintaining industry-leading security best practices, we are implementing some changes to the Microsoft Tech Community. Our primary goal is to ensure that your experience remains secure, seamless, and reliable. The changes are scheduled to take place on Tuesday, Aug 20th, 2024, from 4:00pm to 5:00pm (Pacific Time).

Most members should not notice any difference during this transition, however, there is a small possibility that users whose sessions expire while the change is being made might experience an issue logging in, as may users logging in for the first time that day.

Affected users may find that when they attempt to sign in, they are redirected back to the community homepage and instead of seeing their avatar and name at the top right corner, it will simply display "Sign in."

We understand that this might be frustrating, and we apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and we will provide an update once the migration is fully complete to keep you informed.

We would ask you not to contact our team regarding any issues with login during the maintenance window. If you have issues after the work is completed, please try clearing your cache and logging in again. if you have tried this and it still has not worked then please do contact our team.

Introducing the new file attachment scanner for Microsoft Tech Community

At Microsoft, we are always looking for ways to help our users stay safe and secure online. That's why we are excited to announce the launch of our new file attachment scanner for the Microsoft Tech Community. This feature will scan any file that you want to upload to the community for viruses and malware, it will then alert you if there is a virus detected and remove the file.

We hope that this feature will help you feel more confident and secure when sharing files with other community members, and when accessing files from other sources. However, we also want to remind you that the file attachment scanner is not a substitute for your own vigilance and you should always treat any file that you download from the Microsoft Tech Community as potentially insecure, and scan it with your own antivirus software before opening it. The file attachment scanner is here to help you, but the ultimate responsibility to check files remains with you.

If you find any files the virus scanner has missed that you believe are malicious or harmful please do use the 'report inappropriate content' button next to the post and we will review it and decide what action, if any is needed.

Microsoft Tech Community Update: July 2024

Today, we are excited to announce a new update for the Microsoft Tech Community that brings some important changes and enhancements to the platform. In this blog post, we will explain what these changes are and why they matter for you as a community member.

Display Names without Spaces

One of the most noticeable changes in this update is that we have begun asking affected users who have spaces in their display name to change them. This means that if you still have a display name that contains spaces, such as John Doe or Jane Smith, you will need to update it to a single word, such as JohnDoe or Jane_Smith. You can change your display name at any time from your profile settings.

Why did we make this change? There are two main reasons. First, we wanted to fix some user experience issues with the @mention feature, which allows you to tag other users in your posts and comments. It was previously not possible to tag users with spaces in their names. Now, you can simply type @ followed by the display name, like this: JohnDoe. This is much easier and consistent, and it also makes the @mentions more visible and clickable.

Second, we wanted to prepare for a new user interface that we are planning to launch in the early fall. This new UI will have a more modern and streamlined look and feel, and it will also introduce some new features and functionalities which don’t work if the display name has a space in it. We will be sharing more about this update in the coming weeks and months.

We understand that this change may require some adjustment for some of you, and we appreciate your understanding and cooperation. We believe that this change will improve the overall user experience and prepare the platform for the future.

We will approach this update in two phases, between now and end of August 2024 we will present affected users with a pop up and ask them to update their display name. This pop up can be dismissed.

Phase 2, starting from September 1^st, we will require all affected users to make this change.

Registration Experience

Another change that we have made in this update is to improve the registration experience for new users. Previously, when you signed up for the Microsoft Tech Community, you had to choose a display name. The process for doing this was confusing and we observed some users would leave before selecting a display name. Now, we have simplified the process by suggesting a display name for you based on your first name. You can then change this if you want or keep it as it is.

For example, if your first name is John, we will suggest JohnS123 as your display name. You can then change it to something else, like JohnDoe or JoDoe, or keep it as john_doe. You can also change it later by going to your settings.

We hope that this change will make the registration process easier and faster for new users, while still allowing users to choose their own display name if they wished to do so.

Bug Fixes

Finally, we have also fixed some bugs and issues that were affecting the platform. Here are some of the most notable ones:

We fixed an issue where images on the events pages would break out of the box on the page, causing the layout to look messy and distorted. Now, the images are resized and cropped to fit the box.
We fixed an issue where there was no accessible text for screen readers on the 'Accepted Solution' check icon. This icon indicates that a post has been marked as the best answer by the original poster or a moderator. Now, the icon has text that says, 'Go to Accepted Solution', which can be read by screen readers.

We are always working to improve the Microsoft Tech Community platform and make it the best place for you to learn, share, and connect with other Microsoft enthusiasts and experts. We welcome your feedback and suggestions, and we thank you for your continued support and participation.

Important Update: We're Changing Our Email Address

We have some exciting news to share with you. Starting from Friday 12th January, 2024, we will be sending our community notifications from a new email address: Notifications@CommunityHub.microsoft.com. This change is a direct result of the feedback we have had from you, our users, around identifying authentic emails from the community and form part of our ongoing efforts to improve your experience and engagement with the community.

What does this mean for you?

You will continue to receive the same types of notifications that you have subscribed to, such as new posts, replies, mentions, and badges.
You will see a new sender name and address in your inbox: Microsoft Tech Community <Notifications@CommunityHub.microsoft.com>
You will need to add our new address to your address book or safe senders list, to ensure that our notifications don't end up in your spam or junk folder.

Hello and welcome to this Tech Community Tech Update, I am Allen Smith Technical & Compliance lead for the Microsoft Tech Community.

In this update I want to show you a feature we recently enabled on the Microsoft Tech Community to automatically generate a signature on your posts. The signature can be used to tell other community members who you work for, your job title, your preferred pronouns or a link to your company website.

Interested? let us dive in...

So here we are on the Microsoft Tech Community, any logged in user can create a signature, simply and easily by going to the avatar icon at the top right and clicking My Settings. Now click on Personal Information.

You will see here there is an 'enable signature' button this allows you to turn on and off your quickly and easily. It’s worth nothing that if you turn off your signature it will be removed from every post you have ever made, similarly when you turn it on it will appear in every post you made previously as well.

Be default your signature will show your first name and last name. If these boxes are blank then you should check with your identity provider, Microsoft Accounts such as outlook or live or your employers Microsoft Entra Admin who should be able to update this information for you.

The next option is Pronouns, this field is completely optional, you can choose a pronoun or not, you can choose to include any pronoun you select in the signature or not.

Now you can record your work email and include it in your signature or not by using the check box. Keep in mind that exposing your work email publicly could cause you to receive more spam or unsolicited content, and may also be against your company’s policy, if in doubt check.

Now you can include your Organization Name and then include it in the signature, or not, by using the check box.

Next up you can enter your job title and then choose to include it or not using the provided check box.

If you are interested in connecting with other community members in your locality you can enter it here and then decide if you want to share this information in your signature.

Finally, you can enter a personal / corporate web page or even a link to your LinkedIn, this should be used respectfully, we reserve the right to remove any harmful links or links which do not comply with our Terms of Use or Code of Conduct.

The thing to remember here is that except for your first and last name everything that is or is not included in your Signature is your choice.

Once you have chosen what you want to your signature to contain you can then choose from up to 3 different themes. Over time we may expand the number of themes we offer but we also are trying to keep signatures informative and not to distract from the community experience.

You can preview what your signature will look like.

Click save and your signature is now completed, you will be able to see it on any post you have made or choose to make going forward.

MTC Moments of the Week

This week, we welcomed Windows 365 users to join us for our June Windows 365 AMA to discuss the latest W365 features, deployment, customization, and best practices. We had experts from the engineering and product teams live streaming and answering questions as they came in (shout out to Christian Montoya, Christiaan Brinkhoff, and Andrew Miyasato!). Keep your eyes peeled for the July AMA date coming soon!

And speaking of AMAs, on Thursday, we had a new Tech Community Live with Microsoft Intune to help users learn best practices for managing ALL the endpoints – whether they’re based in Windows and macOS to iOS, Linux, Android, you name it! Engineering and product teams joined us on camera and in chat to answer questions about a whole host of endpoint management topics, from drivers, firmware, and AutoPatch to endpoint security, privilege management, and more! You can catch up on all the sessions here and watch on-demand any time. I’m back with your weekly MTC recap! Took a little time off to focus on some other projects, but that doesn’t mean we didn’t have a LOT going on. So, without further ado, let’s dive in to what’s up and coming!

MTC Moments of the Week

This was a packed week of events with 2 Ask Microsoft Anything’s (AMA’s) and a new episode of Windows In The Cloud.

First up, we had a very special episode of WITC that featured a deep look into Windows 365 Boot and its new features from the IT admin and user perspectives—directly from the creators, including Elina_Luthra, Andrew_Miyasato, Ajit_Surana, and Rinku_Stephen. Next, we had a Microsoft Teams AMA to answer user questions and hear feedback about Events, Webinars, and Virtual Appointments in Teams. We had experts from both the PM and Engineering teams on hand to assist, including roman_frillarte, GayathriRG, Pragathi Raj, JessieHwang, and Jessica_Wilczek.

Last but not least, we had an Azure Communication Services AMA to answer questions about the new features announced during Microsoft Build and more. We were joined by experts from the Azure CS team, including bashan, TomKaupe, MilanKaur, and AshwinderBhatti. Our last MTC Member of the Week spotlight for March goes to LukeJMadden! While Luke is a newer member to the Community, he’s already been helping out other MTC’ers in the Azure Architecture and Microsoft Bookings forums. Thank you for being here, Luke!

We had a double feature over in Events on Thursday! First up, we had a brand new episode of Unpacking Endpoint Management with Danny_Guillory and SteveThomas. Our hosts were joined live by experts from Microsoft Purview - Shilpa_Bothra, Rachelle_Blanchard, and Leo_Ramirez – to talk about all things Endpoint data loss prevention. In case you missed it, be sure to check out the event page for additional resources and tools to help you explore Endpoint DLP on your own schedule!

Following UEM, we had an MS Defender for Cloud AMA event with members of the Defender for Cloud product group on hand - including Thomas_Zou, Tom_Janetscheck, YuriDiogenes, and Denis Mizetski - to talk about Microsoft's point of view on the Cloud Native Application Protection Platform (CNAPP), answer questions, and gather community feedback.

On March 31^st, 1985, the first edition of WrestleMania (WrestleMania I) premiered at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The professional wrestling event featured matches with some of the biggest names in wrestling history, including André the Giant, “Rowdy” Roddy Piper, and Hulk Hogan. Nearly 40 years later, WrestleMania 39 will be taking place this weekend at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California!

MTC Moments of the Week

First, a round of applause for this week’s MTC Member of the Week - NicolasKheirallah! Nicolas is a M365 consultant based in Sweden who works with the entire M365 Suite with special focus on Viva and SharePoint. Thank you for being here, Nicolas!

Following up last week’s Windows in the Cloud episode with one of our Windows 365 MVPs, we had an Ask Microsoft Anything (AMA) on Wednesday with members of the Microsoft engineering and product teams – including Curtis_Sawin, Colby_Hanley, femi_adebayo, and andrej_radinger – on-hand to help and provide answers to the community. This is a monthly series, so if you missed this one or in case new questions pop up, make sure you mark your calendars for the next W365 AMA on April 19!

And speaking of monthly events, we also had our March Windows Office Hours this week, which was originally scheduled for the 16^th. Huge shout out to the office hour virtual crew for joining us, including Heather Poulsen, Aaron Czechowski, Aria Carley, Jason Sandys, Jay Simmons, Joe Lurie, John Vintzel, Jon Andes, Kevin Mineweaser, Rob York, Sean McLaren, and Thomas Trombley. Hello hello, everyone! Happy Friday!

Here’s a recap of what’s been going on in the MTC this week.

MTC Moments of the Week

To start things off, we want to first give a huge shoutout to this week’s MTC Member of the Week - Kidd_Ip! Kidd is a MCT (Microsoft Certified Trainer) and full time IT pro who has made great contributions to a variety of Tech Community forums across Azure and M365. Way to go, Kidd!

Moving to events, on Wednesday, we had our first of two AMA’s. Azure Communication Services and Microsoft Teams joined forces for this event to talk about the possibilities of connecting Teams with the communication capabilities in Azure and the cool stuff we can build with it. A big thank you to our speakers MilanKaur, tchladek, and dayshacarter for sharing your expertise!

Then on Thursday, we had our second AMA all about Windows Server - from upgrading older versions and the importance of regular updates, to the security features in the latest versions of Windows Server (2022). We received a lot of questions, which were answered by our panel of speakers from the Windows Servicing and Delivery team as well as Windows Server engineers and security product managers. Shout out to Artem Pronichkin , Rick_Claus, Scottmca, NedPyle, Rob-Hindman, and the rest team for a great session!

And over on the Blogs, in honor of Women’s History Month, the Marketplace Community kicked off a series of interviews with women leaders in the ISV community. The first edition of this series features an interview between justinroyal and Harmke Alkemade, AI Cloud Solution Architect at Microsoft and Co-Founder at Friendly Flows. We love to see it!

Did you know that the concept of what we know today as “Spring Break” (in the US, at least) began in 1938, when a college swimming coach, Sam Ingram, brought his team down from New York to Fort Lauderdale, Florida in 1936 to train? When the word got around to other swim coaches, they followed suit, and it began an annual pilgrimage for swimmers from across the US to enjoy the sun – and have some fun. The more you know!
