Is Microsoft planning firmware updates for Surface Laptop 3 devices for 2011 Secure Boot key?

As many people know, the UEFI Secure Boot Key provided as part of the Windows devices firmware is expiring in June of 2026. Microsoft have announced plans to update these keys for most Surface devices, but have not made any such announcement for Surface Laptop 3 devices. Will the company issue updated firmware for these devices before June? Or, does the company recommend that users replace these devices before the 2011 key expiration date?

The information publicly available is sparse, but it does appear that Microsoft no longer intends to update firmware for Surface 3 Laptops - which is fine, except that the after the key expiration, these devices will be substantially unusable, with impacts to UEFI Secure Boot, BitLocker and more... This is a Windows problem, and I will personally be very disappointed if Microsoft chooses to abandon users of these machines...

Smart Charging

If Microsoft hasn't already done so, it should explain its reasoning for denying users the option of activating Smart Charging. Microsoft certainly knows users have important reasons for wanting to control that. My computer only knows how it's been used. I know how I will be using it. So there must be some less-than-obvious reason for restricting that. Users have control of options that, on the surface, appear much more dangerous than controlling whether battery level charges to 80 percent or 100 percent.

Windows 10 and 11 Dual Boot vs Hyper-V or Virtual Box, etc.

I have a Surface Studio 2 that is dual boot between Windows 10 and 11 - it allows me to pick the OS the boot screen. Anyone successfully configured this one another Surface old enough to support Windows 10? The recovery images were helpful in getting this setup in the first place.

i used disk manager to shrink the partition so I could dual boot configure the system. In theory I could dual boot Windows 11 and use one install to join the Windows Insiders while maintaining another partition/image for production versions of the OS…

My ARM versions of Surface don’t seem to run the Hyper V/Windows Sandbox as easily as my handy old Intel versions do!

Hello everyone, I need your help.

I have a Surface Pro 7, and a few days ago the keyboard cover stopped working. I have a Surface Pro 5 at home, and I tested the keyboard on the Pro 7, and it works fine. The controllers are up to date, and I don't have any drivers to install. Right now, the Surface doesn't recognize the keyboard. Now, an odd question: is there a key that turns the keyboard's Bluetooth on and off? I don't want to factory reset the Surface.

Surface Pro 7 & 8 Suddenly Not Loading Certain Websites and Apps

I moved to a new house and have all the same routers and services. After being here almost 2 weeks, both my Surface Pro 7 & Surface Pro 8 suddenly quit loading certain websites and apps. First noticed Twitter, then Amazon, speed test sites, etc on my Pro 8. Any app that requires internet access won't load. The device always shows that the device is connected to the internet. My email, calendar and some other sites load fine. I went through every diagnostic with a MS agent online and he finally gave up and considered it a hardware issue. The device was under warranty and so I shipped it in for service.

I have a Pro 7 also, so I just began to use it. It was fine for about a day, then the same thing started happening. We have changed DNS services, gone through Surface Diagnostic Tool, updated, etc. Every other device in the house is working fine but the Surface devices. I finally got the idea to tether to my phone...and everything works!! So, if I get off of the internet in the house (which it has worked flawlessly with for 2 1/2 yrs) and tether to an outside source, it works fine. It has to be something peculiar to Surface devices. Anyone have any ideas?

Hey everyone,

I've had a Surface Pro 9 with a Surface Dock 2 for a couple of months now with 2 Dell U2723QE monitors connected via USB C. This setup was working great up until this morning where the 2 displays suddenly stopped working. After some messing around, I was able to narrow it down to an issue with the dock because if I connect the monitors to the surface directly they work fine again. I went through the suggestions on this Microsoft troubleshooting site, tried updating drivers on the graphics card and dock, doing all Windows updates and clearing the display cache, but haven't had any luck yet.

It could just be a bad dock I suppose and I need to get a warranty claim setup, but it just seems strange that it happened so suddenly.

If anyone has any ideas or suggestions, they'd be super appreciated. Thanks!

Surface type cover stopped working

I've owned a Surface pro 4 for years that I primarily use in hotels as a streaming device and it's been great for that.
Within the last year my surface keyboard began having issues where it wasn't being recognized, no illumination etc. I incorrectly assumed this was a keyboard issue so I purchased a new one. I continued to have issues with the keyboard not working 90% of the time. Sometimes it would work after boot and then stop working after minutes. It was acting very sporadic as it would work and then stop working or vice versa without rebooting, shutting down etc. I even noticed that it would occasionally work and then I'd close the keyboard cover and it would stop working. Of course I cleaned all the connection pins and made sure nothing appeared broken.

Last weekend I forgot my laptops on a business trip and found a Surface pro 6 i7 with pen and keyboard for $100 which seemed like a decent deal so I picked it up. Well as it turns out this device has the exact issues as my Surface pro 4.

I've worked in IT for 20+ years but unfortunately had a stroke last year which certainly affects my thinking. I've been beating my head against the wall trying to resolve this issue but I have yet to find a real fix. From what I'm finding other users are having the same issue but I haven't seen a real fix yet. I've tried rolling back and uninstalling surface type cover drivers, disabling the keyboard and re-enabling it in the BIOS, etc.

It seems almost impossible to me that Microsoft isn't aware of this issue or doesn't know a fix. It sure seems coincidental that Microsoft is recently selling a Bluetooth keyboard but hasn't posted anything about a current fix for users with the Surface type cover.

Any help is greatly appreciated. I feel like I'm going in circles on this one and am getting nowhere. I enjoy the form factor and ergonomics on the surface, hence why I've brought several of them but the fact that Microsoft likely knows about this issue and a fix but isn't sating anything other than suggestions to buy a BT keyboard is nonsense. This is likely ensuring I never buy another Microsoft device. Thank you Again.
