Windows update always fails if drive letter A: exists on system

Visitor

Hello,

this error has been present ever since Windows Update was first released. For some reason no updates will download if there is a drive A: present on your system. The reported error code is 0x80070057 i.e. not enough disk space as if it's checking A: for free space and even-though there is plenty a room, it fails. C: is the Windows System Drive, but as long as there is A: Windows update fails. My remedy throughout the years has been to do

subst /d a:

and then manually retry the update. Mounting the same path as any other drive letter works just fine. Windows update breaks only if it's A:

Please look into why this is a problem for Windows Update. Thank you.
