I turned my laptop on this morning and logged in, no taskbar (just empty grey space where it should be).

No windows button combinations combinations work.

Having suffered this is older versions of windows (like XP) I quickly tried the old faithful "Ctrl-Alt-Delete" options:

1- restart (It did have an update to do, which I allowed). However on restart and login - same problem.

2 - task manger - firstly restart windows explorer, then stopping it and then "Run new task"->explorer

Niether of these has resolved my problem. In fact I can start tasks I need (such as outlook and teams) from task manager, but to get them to load i have to restart explorer afterward to allow the load to occur. Outlook required one reset of explorer for the loading screen and another when loading was complete to ope the actual app.

Any help on this would be great.

Thank you.

P.S. When I try to run settings (to try and run another windows update) from command line (and snip and sketch to take a screenshot for you) I get filesystem errors.

Will attempt checkdisk next

@Pat_Twining

I just had an update done on my Beta release and same issue here. Can't do anything unless I have the icon on my desktop for it.

When I put the mouse down to the taskbar I get the spinning wheel and can't do anything.

I also can't right-click.

I was able to roll it back by opening Control Panel via the Task Manager (File > Open new task and type in “control”) and going to Review your computer’s status (under System and Security) > Recovery > Open System Restore and undoing the latest system update.

Alternatively, pressing ctrl+alt+del and shift+clicking on Restart will give you the option to run the system restore before restarting.

This doesn’t work for everyone it seems, but I hope it helps someone.
Is this the defective update? KB5006050

@fabiomagnoni Yep.

Will try system restore from restart in ctrl-alt-del now

no go.

control panel next

having the same problem…tried everything but didnt work

Solution
same problem here: for temporary fixing I do this: task manager > run regedit "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Shell\Update\Packages" and created a DWORD by name "UndockingDisabled" with a value of 1. With that I can use the most of software and explorer.exe to work We need ASAP the bug fixing.

No dice - after the rollback (which took a very long time) it ran update whilst loading (I'm still back on 22000.168) but same problem.

Will attempt the registry work around now

Registry edited - now for restart to see if it's fixed!

I have a taskbar again.

Thanks @wcalcagno!!

Hopefully a permanent fix on the horizon
AAARGH. Went to check the time. Systray icons still there (along with settings cog) but the connectivity/audio/date widget is missing :(
