Renumbering Linked Predecessors

I link a schedule items to other project schedules with the file path and item number, what happens if the manager of the sub schedules renumber their line items?

When you renumber a schedule, the program knows how to transition predecessors and successors to the new numbering system. But when you manually put in the file path and number (\\filepath\01fs) in a master schedule, is the system programed to know what has occurred an follows the change?

No it is not. One of the problems with linked structures in Project is they are fragile and prone to corruption. Cardinal rules are, never rename, move, overwrite or "save off" to another location, any of the files in the structure. Doing so creates duplicate or ghost paths which directly result in corruption of the structure.
