I posted the March update Project Server 2010, 2013 and 2016 March 2016 PU Announcement announcing the fixes for Project 2010, 2013 and 2016, and Project Server 2013 (no Project Server 2010 fixes – although a new ‘rollup’ which includes the SharePoint fixes).

One important fix announced was for the problem of opening mpp files from SharePoint sites and having issues with ‘read-only’.  We have changed the way we handle the file opening to be like the rest of Office – so hopefully this problem should finally be resolved.

And other hot news – today we reach a big milestone for Project Server 2016 – release to web – and an evaluation copy can be found on the download center .  See for the SharePoint announcement.  The binaries for Project Server 2016 are baked into the SharePoint Server 2016 installation, although Project Server still is a separate product and will need licensing before it can be used.  This does mean that Project Server will always be ready to go in a SharePoint farm – and all Public Updates for SharePoint Server 2016 include Project Server 2016 fixes too – so no more ‘individual’ Project Server patches for Project Server 2016.

Support for the evaluation is via the TechNet forums.  The ‘What’s new’ document at is a great starting point if you haven’t looked at any of the pre-release versions.

General availability will be early May via the Microsoft Volume Licensing Service Center .

Thanks to all the customers involved with the pre-release programs!
