Sorting in Planner

What is the best way to sort tasks beside dragging them?  It would be great to sort them by label, alphabetically or date order.  I can't seem to find an automatic way.

Sorting a bucket by date order would make it significantly easier for the every day user to use planner. Currently I create the bucket backwards by date as the default task creation adds the task to the top. Manually dragging tasks by date is a serious issue.
Trying to convince my team to switch from Asana to Planner, but they feel that sorting by due date is a must-have in the board view.

@Annette_VKC Microsoft HOW is this still not a feature? Such a basic thing that would save so much time. Still have a long way to go to come anywhere near the functionality of the likes of Trello.

Microsoft--really? How are we to take Teams seriously as an organizing tool without the ability to sort cards in a task by due date or label alpha? A glaring omission.
I’m assuming this hasn’t been addressed yet as of May 2022? It really is a serious flaw!

To my knowledge there has been no response on this issue. It seems that Microsoft is less concerned about their users than either Slack or Ryver, who at least give the impression that their tech people are addressing problems. I will be discussing alternatives with our IT folks.

Agreed, we want to use this tool because it's less cumbersome than some of the alternatives, but some of the basic functionality gaps have us rethinking the use of this tool.

Agree, this is basic functionality that we need in order for Planner to be useful. I'm using Planner at work, because that's what we are allowed to use, but it really lacks functionality in comparison to Trello etc.

Agreed :
New Task shoukd be added at the end of the bucket.
Order by : Due Date, Start Date, Priority , etc .....

I was struggling with this too and found some helpful little tricks!

1. Sorting the board in Planner itself:

When you're on the board view, you can choose "group by" in the upper right corner. By choosing that, you can group all the tasks on your board immediately "by end date" or "by label" etc.

Doesn't work on the list view as far as I'm aware but it's still something!

2. Sorting the list view in Teams:

You can add a Planner to Teams or a Teams group* (more details below).

If you then open the Planner-tab from the Teams group, you can sort the list-view by simply clicking on Title, or Priority or Bucket etc. and it will sort by date or alphabetically.

*Tip: if you'd like to see all your tasks across teams/groups/plans, you can add the Planner app to Teams in general. By clicking on the three elipses on the left navigation bar. Next, you search for "planner" and add it. It will now show you a complete view of all your tasks as a sortable list-view.
(Preferrably right click on the icon then, to pin it to the sidebar, so you won't have to search for it all the time.)

@Lotte_VdS these are two very helpful tricks.  Thanks for sharing them!

I'm surprised that this is not a feature. I wonder what the PM intended Planner to be like.
I agree on this. I would love to be able to sort my buckets by date vs. just "dragging" them in order. I've got 50 projects in just one bucket and do not have the time to do it manually. I've just ended up exporting that bucket to xcel and then sorting in xcel by date. It's a pain, but it helps.
I've come here to say the same thing - Microsoft, I would really like to sort my buckets by date order (descending or ascending) - please make this a feature!
Frustratingly, although the 'list' view in Teams allows you to filter and sort, it doesn't show all the columns - start date isn't there! I can't find any way of sorting a list of tasks by start date, either in Teams or in the web version of Planner.

Giving this a look on 8/28/2023, there are full organizing options available in Planner.  I do not know when they were implemented, but you can sort by a multitude of options.  They still do not allow you to organize alphabetically, though.  You still have to drag and drop everything into order.

@Mike_S360 thanks for the update! What would be idea would be to have a 'sort by due date' for the individual buckets :(

Lol, I searched, dicovered ans came to this place precisely to ask this question. The year is 2023 and Microsoft has a table with date column that you can't sort by date. What the actual flying duck is going on at MS dev teams ffs.
