Outlook corrupts the message by handling the subject incorrectly during forward - UTF-8 BOM

Copper Contributor

Hello!
I am facing issue in Outlook. When I receive a message, it is displayed correctly, however, when I forward it using the Forward option, the message is corrupted - a blank line appears in email headers space, which causes that header fragments are visible in the body of the email and styles are not supported, email content is unreadable.

Forwarding by another email client works fine.

I discovered that part of the subject in the header of the message is causing the problem.

This is an example (I replaced the characters in the subject with X - I don't want to show the real subject of the message):

Subject: =?UTF-8?Q?=EF=BB=BFXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX?=
=?UTF-8?Q?XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX=0A?=

The received message is displayed correctly, sent message on my pc is also fine, but the recipient see something like this as message content in his Outlook:

?=

Date: Tue, 23 Mar 2021 13:34:04 +0100

Message-ID: <XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX>

MIME-Version: 1.0

Content-Type: multipart/mixed;

X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook 16.0

This is a multipart message in MIME format.

------=_NextPart_000_000F_01D71FE9.31651C70

Content-Type: text/plain;

                charset="UTF-8"

Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable

and there is broken body without HTML style, just plain text with HTML code.

I discovered that if I change manually subject (by deleting the UTF8-BOM signature) with text editor to:

Subject: XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Forwarding is handled properly.

If I click "Forward" and manually change subject of email in outlook create message window - it works!

Also forwarding is handling properly with sending using MAPI with original subject. Sending with SMTP doesen't works well with Outlook - works with different clients.

Is there anything I can do about this in Outlook? Forwarding is working fine in different email clients (web clients and dekstop clients).

Outlook specs:
-Incoming protocol: IMAP

-Outgoing protocol: SMTP

Doesen't work in outlook 2019 and 2016.

Just do not use as IMAP email client - there are many alternatives.
IMAP is protocol for reciving and managing mail in inbox, not sending emails, which is causing the problem so thank you for your pointless advice.

You are correct. For sending it uses SMTP protocol. Extended phrase:
Outlook is just a bad SMTP/IMAP email client, IMHO, and I do not understand why people use it this way.
