My hotmail account is supposed to no longer be supported as of Sept. 16, 2024. What do I need to do?

Copper Contributor

I access Outlook/Hotmail on my iMac and iPhone. Apparently the Basic security progrm is no longer going to work after Sept. 16. What am I supposed to do? I see directions for Outlook for Windows, but I am on an IOS system.

@fordwilliams i also have the same problem as you i have received an email saying i need to upgrade my hotmail and outlook email accounts for security reasons but i find the information how to do it very confusing

i have deleted the outlook account on my iPhone and reinstalled it  hoping that will upgrade the security but it never showed any changes to me not sure if that method works apart from that i am completely at a loss how to upgrade as i do not understand the procedure in the email I received

Basically, MSFT stops supporting 'basic authentication'.
The latest versions of Outlook, Apple Mail, and Thunderbird will all support these changes, so this will largely affect any app that hasn’t been updated to support “Modern Auth".

Starting with iOS 11.0, the native mail client has support for OAuth 2.0. (OAuth 2.0 = "modern authentication")

@grahamneal123 thanks for replying  but I am still not clear on what is happening   by deleting and reinstalling my outlook email will that update the security ? And everything will work fine  I am not very technical with this stuff

Hi, I'm sorry for not being clear enough.
By re-configuring your email account on your iOS device, latest authentication method (OAuth 2.0 = more secure) will be used IF your device supports this.

If you have iOS 11.0 or higher, all should be OK.
To check which iOS version your iPhone is running, follow these steps:
Open Settings.
Scroll down and tap General.
Tap About.
Look for the number next to "Software version"

Sadly, I don't have an iOS myself so can't provide you with any screenshots.

Hope this information is more clear!

@FrederikSeyns thanks for explaining it to me I have an iso 17  iPhone so all should be be good hopefully thanks again

Feel free to reach out if you don't receive your emails after Sept 16 on your device.

@FrederikSeyns

I appreciateyour offer to reach out if I don’t get emails on Sept 16, but is there a way to prevent such loss? Can I download the latest version of Outlook? (Not sure I understand difference between Outlook and Hotmail.) Many thanks!

Hi

I have also received the message about Sept 16th and am confused as to what to do. I have identified that my laptop is running New Outlook so will this be OK for use after Sept 16th? Or do I need to take any action?

If so then I guess I am getting the emails from MS because my hotmail account is accessible on my iPhone too in which case I need to delete the account on the iPhone and re-set it up I think.

Does all that sound right?

Thanks.

@jeffsg that’s sounds about right as I have the same issues you have I think I have updated my outlook account on the Microsoft hub  and I have deleted and reinstalled outlook email account on my iPhone but because I have not removed and reinstalled my Hotmail account on my phone I am getting that warning email hopefully everything be ok

It's not clear to me exactly what this new sign-in requirement effects.

1) Does this new sign-in requirements effect Microsoft Hotmail using "outlook.live.com" in a web browser?

2) Does this new sign-in requirement effect the current Android Outlook email app?

Do you know if this will impact Macs? My iPhone IOS is a high enough version and I recently updated my OS on my Mac to Sonoma v. 14.16.1. I access my email on my Mac through the Apple email icon and have by my .msn and .me emails on there.

Thanks.

Well it's now the 17th September and my emails on my laptop are working fine however I found out that I couldn't attach pictures and email from my iPhone so I set up Outlook on the phone and now can attach pictures but it's not as easy as before.

Hi there
For #1 - You can still use Outlook.live.com in your browser and continue to login like you have always done.

For #2 - Using the latest Outlook for Android will also be a good solution and you should not be impacted.
Great to hear things are working for you. Just so you know the changes are starting to slowly roll out and they will be expanding to more and more accounts as the days go on.

facing the same issue , cannot access emails on my iPhone 14,

tried resetting email password, if I delete email account from my phone and reinstall it will I loose the emails that are already there?

and will this fix the issue?
