Microsoft 365 / Outlook No longer opens after Windows Update (7/15/2020)

Brass Contributor

Today a Windows Update installed and I restarted.  KB4560366 and one other.

After this Outlook won't start.  It opens to ask for profile selection, then I click ok, and it disappears.  No process running in Task Manager.

Next time I open, it asks if I want to go into safe mode.  It will start in safe mode, and I've tried several online suggestions for example turning off presence settings, but when I go back into outlook it still won't start and if I re-enter safe mode I can see that the change I made (removing presence settings) was NOT SAVED.

I don't know any way out of this.  Outlook was working normally yesterday.

Another thing I tried was completely uninstalling Office, rebooting my computer, and then reinstalling Office.  This changed nothing either because (1) outlook won't open normally, and (2) when I open in safe mode all of the old settings are there (like for example my mailbox account configuration).

Any ideas folks?

At about the same time I face the problem. It gave me no sign of update yet it cannont open!!!!!

Same problem - specifically after the Win10 2004 - had to rollback in order for Office 365 to work.  Personally I'm waiting for next Windows 10 version to upgrade.   Also in the last couple of days my Office 365 Outlook won't connect with a Gmail account when everything was working just fine previously.  Concurrently on another computer where I have Office 2019 everything works fine with the Gmail account.  I was able to use Windows Mail client to connect to Gmail as a work around.  Microsoft probably won't admit to this boo-boo though.

Run this script in powershell to roll back the version of microsoft office. This worked for us:

Set-Location -Path 'C:\Program Files\Common Files\microsoft shared\ClickToRun' ; .\OfficeC2RClient.exe /update user updatetoversion=16.0.12827.2047

@tceja This came from the same reddit article I found but I used the other version listed.  I think either one of them would work.

Thanks.

Worked for me too!!! Thanks!

Same problem here! Thank you, MS.

The same thing happened yesterday ( 7/15/2020) with my Outlook/Office ( etc) 2019  software.  & I called a computer tech ( where I bought the computer ) and he told me 47 people called him about the same problem, that it was a Microsoft issue, and not an issue with my computer. He said just to wait and Microsoft will fix the problem. The next day, it worked fine.  However, this didn't happen the result of an update ( or maybe it updated automatically and it happened, I don't know, but that's probably it, it was a bad update which Microsoft fixed, apparently ).

@jazzypat

I read about that.  I only use outlook with gmail though so for me i do not think it was the server-side issue that was being discussed.  Either way mine was working a day earlier :)
