Gmail less secure apps being locked down

Copper Contributor

On May 30, 2022 Google is locking down "less secure apps".

See Google's announcement here:

https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/6010255?hl=en

I'm using Outlook 2019, ad use Gmail via Outlook for 95% of my Email traffic.

I would think Microsoft is aware of this. Will using Outlook require a manual 2FA intervention every time a connection is made with Gmail?

Open your Google Admin console (admin.google.com).
Click Security > Basic settings .
Under Less secure apps, select Go to settings for less secure apps .
In the subwindow, select the Enforce access to less secure apps for all users radio button. ...
Click the Save button.

@Nick_Down_Under

Yes, excellent thanks Stewart.  I struggled with this for a couple of hours until I found your solution !

It works on my desktop with W10 & O365 (and even on my old laptop with W8.1 & O2007).

Many thanks !!

Doesn't work for Outlook 2010 :(
As of today google has removed this option

@RobinTheBroker is there any way that Google will let me download my emails into Outlook?

@KeithLaKey  I am having the same issue. Unable to use Outlook for gmail accounts and there is no work around that I am aware of. MS needs to step up so that we can still have all of our various emails in one space. Personally I can stand using webmail after using Outlook since its inception.

Since 30 May 2022, my Outlook 2021 on a Windows 10 Desktop will NOT process any of my GMAIL emails. My current system has worked flawlessly way back to Outlook 2007 without issue. If anyone has found a solution please feel free to share. Thank you.
Thank you @stewartgoodin. Also thanks to @Peter_Rosner for the clear explanation of how to enter the 16-digit password. Between the two of you, I was successfully able to overcome Google's removal of the "enable less-secure apps" setting by setting an app password. I use Outlook 365 and it's working great again.

Hi @mikec7 I am experiencing exactly the same issue you did and wondered if the solution you referred to is still fully working? Thanks in advance.

Hi @anthony3220 ,

Yes, it's working fine.

@stewartgoodin explained the basic fix, but didn't explain how or where to enter the 16-digit password. I found the answer to that in one of @Peter_Rosner's posts. Good Luck!

@anthony3220 good morning sir yes the information I provided is still working perfectly if you have any trouble let me know and I’ll gladly help

Stewart Goodin @ gmail.com

Thank you for the reply @stewartgoodin
Unfortunately the 'fix' has not worked for me. I followed the instruction in this thread: "I logged into my GMAIL account, and changed my password from 12 to 16 characters. Restarted Outlook (2021 in my case) and when prompted, entered my new 16 character GMAIL password".

It has made no difference and I am still unable to access ANY of my Gmail accounts via Outlook. My Gmail accounts work perfectly via the Google site and on my iPhone so it is NOT an incorrect password/ username issue. Be very interested in your thoughts in case I've missed anything.

Thanks in advance of any input Stewart.

Hi @stewartgoodin

Can you explain to everyone why you are sharing an email address for a contact outside of the MTC Forum?

You did it again, unfortunately I have to warn other users! If you are an IT specialist

it's definitely weird!

Please do not send to this user Nothing - which is bound by a password or anything!

because 'they' are a SCAMMER trying to PHISH poor schmucks.

I TRIED to warn everyone - with a clear post

but it has been DELETED (no trace I can see anywhere!) - by 'admin'?
HOWEVER, 'ADMIN' must have seen IT, AND my 2 'reports' about the scamming - because they REMOVED THE EMAIL ADDRESS on the previous scam post - (stewart_goodin)

but NOW the real 'stewartgoodin' account seems to be hacked TOO
which is why you are asking why THEY included an email address

to repeat what I said in previous warning post for the community - POOR STEWART GOODIN

Microsoft are both responsible AND irresponsible.
#phishing enablers

be warned if you are reading this in June 2022 - there are scammers in this thread phishing / trying to engage people
they are posting email addresses

but despite reports to 'moderator' - they continue to masquerade as legitimate users

and posts (like this) warning others in the community - are being deleted

....

GOOD NEWS: the solution by the REAL Stewart Goodin WORKS.

make sure you do the last step = MAIL

- and go back into settings to allow 'mail' ('windows computer')  in the APPS, after you have gone through the rigmarole of 2 factor authentication.
- it will 'generate' a "16 digit passcode/password" that hyou then copy and paste into outlook (replacing your own pw)

(note: don't know if you can just make up your OWN '16 dig pw' ? - who has time or the will to test?)

& in JUNE 2022 - 'allow less secure apps' is redundant/not an option

AFAIK, there's 2 solutions: Stewart's / 2 FACTOR AUTH + MAIL ON THIS PC (16 dig pw)

or

another registry something edit - even more complicated / time consuming

PLEASE send invoices for your time to MICROSOFT.

or they will never learn.

Thanks for trying

Hi @eventempered

Yes, the actor inspires trust with a helpful answer others confirm it and gives an email address, and the inexperienced user is perfidiously attacked!

Thank you!

Personally I gave up on importing gmail into outlook years ago. Gmail saying they are tough on security is a joke. They pretty much ban VPNs or anything that prevents them from data mining - lol. It became a huge pain having to verify so I keep gmail separate and login from time to time. My work stuff stays separate in outlook.
