Duplicate File Name on OneDrive (iPadOS version) App Only

Copper Contributor

I find that there are duplicated file names for saved file on OneDrive app (iPadOS). But unlike genuine duplicate files which will add post-fix numerical behind their names when there are two conflicting files, these duplicate file names appear not genuine, ie one cannot tap to open them.

As you can see the first and second screenshots below, there are quite a few duplicate names for AFM review list.xlsx, but only the first one is genuine and can be edited.

1st First file is genuine1st First file is genuine2nd Click ... sign and pop-up window showing modification options2nd Click ... sign and pop-up window showing modification options

As you can see in the 3rd screenshot below, there are no modification options after I clicked ...

Only OneDrive on iPadOS shows this, other versions like ios on iPhone, macOS, Windows 10 have no such duplicate names, neither can I find them on the web version.

As you can see, it's quite annoying and these names start to accumulate, and I don't know how to delete them

I tried to remove the original file from offline access, but to no avail.

One thing though I noticed is that AFM review list.xlsx had had duplicated conflicting names earlier (such as AFM Review List.xlsx and AFM Review List1.xlsx) before I deleted the duplicated file which is AFM Review List1.xlsx.

Is this connected? Can someone show me how to fix this duplicate non-genuine file names issue?

Hi @JJ_Score,

Yes, the two issues are likely connected. When OneDrive on iPadOS encounters a file with a duplicate name, it should automatically rename it with a numerical suffix.

Here are a few things you can try to fix the issue:

  1. Update the OneDrive app. Microsoft is aware of this bug and has released a fix in a recent update. Make sure you are running the latest version of the OneDrive app.
  2. Restart your iPad. This can sometimes fix minor software glitches.
  3. Sign out of and back into Microsoft OneDrive. This can clear any temporary problems with your account.
  4. Delete the OneDrive app and reinstall it. This will reset the app to its factory default settings.

If you are still having problems after trying the above steps, you can try to manually rename the duplicate files. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Open the OneDrive app on your iPad.
  2. Navigate to the folder where the duplicate files are located.
  3. Tap and hold on the duplicate file name until a menu appears.
  4. Tap Rename.
  5. Enter a new name for the file and tap Done.

Hi Leon Pavesic,

Thank you for you advice. AT the end, I uninstall OneDrive on iPadOS and reinstall it again. Those duplicates are now gone.
