OneDrive slow to save unless File Collaboration disabled

I have noticed it takes a couple of seconds to save a document to OneDrive unless I disable the File Collaboration option with OneDrive settings.

Once disabled, saves are much faster and it does not seem to affect co-authoring even when disabled.

Can anyone comment on this please?

Currently I am of the mind to use Group Policy to disable this as part of the rollout of OneDrive

with file collaboration option on , Office save files directly on SharepointOnline;
without this option, office save file locally , then OneDrive agent upload assynchronously the file to sharepointonline later.

Thanks for the technical explanation @jcnicoud

To avoid any sync issues, sounds like I just need to make sure the file is fully synced before collaborating against it.
