The Office apps for phones using Windows 10 Mobile – Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote -- will reach end of support on January 12, 2021. On that date, app users will no longer receive security updates, non-security hotfixes, free assisted support options or online technical content updates from Microsoft. This decision follows the earlier announcement that support for Windows 10 Mobile ends on December 10, 2019.

Microsoft remains committed to providing a great Office experience on phones for consumer, commercial, education, and government users through the iOS and Android apps which continue to be supported. You can get the Office iOS and Android apps through the app stores for those platforms.

What does end of support mean?

The mobile apps for Office are governed by Microsoft's Modern Lifecycle Policy. Microsoft provides bug fixes and security fixes to support the product experience through the end of this lifecycle, known as the product's end of support. On January 12, 2021, you will no longer be able to install these Office apps on phones using Windows 10 Mobile and Microsoft will no longer provide the following support:

  • Technical support for issues
  • Bug fixes for issues that are discovered
  • Security fixes for vulnerabilities that are discovered.

What are my options?

If you already have the apps installed before the end of support date, the apps will continue to work. However, because of the lack of security updates, we strongly recommend that if you wish to use Office on a phone you transition to the latest Microsoft Office apps on an iOS or Android phone. Not only will you find Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote apps in the iOS and Android app stores, you will also find new innovations such as the Office app which provides a simple, integrated experience with Word, Excel, and PowerPoint all in one app with all the mobile features you already know and use.

Does this also apply to the Mobile UWP apps on Windows 10 desktop?

I thought the mobile office apps are meant for devices with 10.1 inch screen or less.

How about tablets running Windows 10?

Copper Contributor

Does this apply to Android/iPhone as well, or just Windows phone? Will Android/iPhone continue to be supported through 2021 and beyond? @Bill Doll

Microsoft

This only applies to the Mobile apps on Windows 10 Mobile (phones). Since they will continue to be supported on tablets of 10.1, they will continue to work on the Windows 10 desktop.

Microsoft

@uiuc18 - This is not related to Android or iOS. We continue to support and invest in these apps on those platforms.

Hi, @Bill Doll

What will happen with the apps I have purchased for Windows 10 Mobile?

I don't have a Windows Phone anymore, the one I had got stolen, So now I use an Android phone, And I'm wondering if I'm never gonna be able to use the apps I bought again anymore, Minecraft, for example, I bought it on 2015 for Windows Mobile and I cannot use it anymore, or Monument Valley, or GTA San Andreas... Do I have to buy them again for Android? that's insane, or are you telling me that I'll only be able to use them on the tablets? I just want either my money back or some way to use the apps either on Android or Windows 10 [not Mobile]...

Since Windows Phone is no longer supported, will Microsoft allow the Bootloader to be Unlocked So that I may port Android in it? Microsoft should consider it, since we have now lost faith in Microsoft releasing Mobile devices again.

@Bill Doll Office apps aren't working on Windows 10 mobile. As soon as i try to open they launch briefly and then crashes without any error. Kindly provide some support. I understand MS will not provide any support on Apps but they should continue to work.

Over 1.2 million Microsoft Phone users are still using Windows Phone in US, I cannot imagine that with Microsoft power of AI, the windows phone platform cannot be revived to serve. The Nokia Lumia 950 & 950XL platform can run Windows 11 operating software,!! So many people rely on Windows phone platform world wide., Please reconsider and revive Windows 10 professional phone with 2.2 Ghz, chip, 28 Gig of internal & 200 GB SD card memory, it works besutifully on G LTE At&T Phone.
