Search List Items

Can someone tell me if it is possible to search for List Items while using SharePoint Search on the root site? 

We are using SharePoint Online with Modern Pages. 

Search works fine while users are in the list, but they would like to be able to search this list from anywhere on the site.

I believe at this moment is not possible to search list items in the new search experience

Its correct that you can not set the default scope to global for a teamsite/commsite currently. Please also see this thread that is discussing around the same issue: https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/SharePoint/Scoping-of-search-in-team-site-communication-sites...

As a possible mitigation, instead of redirecting to the classic search you could redirect this url:<YOURTEAMSITE>/_layouts/15/search.aspx?q=<startquery>

This should take you to your upscoped search results page.
