"Edit on Word" opens a new word doc instead of the current document.

We have recently started using O365 with OneDrive in our company. We have a computer that when you open a doc in the browser and then selects "edit in word" it will open a new blank doc instead of the current doc. This happens in any browser and on multiply O365 accounts.

 

This issue started with the user getting a message that there wasn't an application to open a ms-word file. i saw that there was no program set for ms-word and that you couldn't select any thing. i saw that some people recommended reinstalling so i did that.  After the reinstall there was the file association. 

 

Now after the reinstall we no longer get the error about not having an application to open it with, but it in now just opening a blank doc instead of the file. is this possibly a registry issue? does anyone have any thoughts on how we could resolve this?

Have you tried to recovery Office, instead of reinstalling?

do you mean repair office? Yes I did also try a repair yesterday. same results as a reinstall. 

after a week or so i ran another update on office and this resolved the issue.
