Office Updates every morning

Copper Contributor

Hi,

for most of the users Office updates itself every morning. This is very annoying because when e.g writing an email Outlook closes itself without notification. For some users it is sufficient to delete local Outlook profile and manually delete all outlook related files and folders under %AppData". Sometimes this does not help, so I deleted local windows profile, but for some users even that only helps for some time and the issue reappears.

Last year we moved alle office 365 users from one tenat to another ( Azure Sync ). In the old tenant we hat O365 Pro Plus, now we use O365 Business Standard. We deploy via odt and script. We are on the Semi-Annual Enterprise channel

Any idea what is going on and how to fix that strange update behaviour?

no ideas?

@uhewuihiu Hi, never heard anything like that before so this is just a wild guess. Any chance you haven't configured the following setting?

https://admx.help/?Category=Office2016&Policy=office16.Office.Microsoft.Policies.Windows::L_OfficeMg...

Also guessing this could be set right now

Hi, setting from first link was not configured, but to be honest, I don't quite believe that this will affect us:

This policy setting enables programmatic control of Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise.

If you enable this policy setting, Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager or other application management solutions can manage Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise. After applying the policy setting, you need to restart the Office Click-to-Run service.

We do not use a management solution. Just WSUS.

Settings from 2nd link was activated via GPO (automatic updates for Office)

@ChristianBergstrom

Our settings are set to directly update from CDN, no local source and no other management solutionen.

Even purging office ( deleting everything in the user app data folder) and re-installing via "setup.exe /configure .abc.xml" does not remove this strange behaviour.

Still an issue? Obviously you’re not using the channels as the automatic updates are running. Why don’t you open up a support ticket with Microsoft. It’s too difficult without knowing the big picture. These kind of issues really need to be analyzed properly, collecting logs etc. Microsoft can assist with that.

@ChristianBergstrom

What exactly do you mean we are not using the channels?

We set up Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel

Hi, as you said ”Office updates itself every morning” I meant your Office and/or update settings are not configured properly. I recommend the official support as mentioned above.
