Office 365 Group Site Collection Admin

Copper Contributor

Hi guys,

I'am a bit confused about the Site Collection Admin for an Office 365 Connected Site Collection. In SharePoint normally when you add an Group to the Site Collection Admins alls members will have admin rights.

If you create an Office 365 Group the Site Collection Admin is the created Group. Normally all members would have admin rights, so there have to be an addtional query from MS if person is only member then assign no admin rights or something like that.

Maybe someone knows something about how the Site Collection Admin group works?

kind regards

Making someone an Office 365 Group Owner will give them site collection administrators rights, while Group members have SharePoint Edit permissions. Is that what you mean? Is the question about how to manage this or some limitations?

Hi  Cian,

almost, if you look at the SharePoint Site Collection admins the wohle group is assignend admin rights but only the owner have that right

Normally all user in that group have admin rights so there must be a backround query or anything else that only the owners have that right. Found no infos about that

Thanks for the clarification, hopefully, someone will be able to chip in with more info.

Interesting find! One of the reasons, I guess, that the Site Collection Administrators link is no longer available on the Site Settings page :) (Of course it is still available through the Advanced Permissions Settings)

The Office type of groups has a seperate members and owners construct. My guess is that only the owners part is read by the Site Collection Administrators field. So it is not filtering, it is already just querying the owners of that group.

It's a Microsoft development glitch. This is an explanation from MS found here:

... The recap is: Site Collection Ownership is linked to ownership of the associated O365 Group. In pseudo-code, SPSite.Owner == Group.Owner.  When you go to mngsiteadmin.aspx we have a display bug that renders the group name but doesn't make it clear it's the group owners. ...
