Office 365 Datacenter Move - Deadline for UK and South Korea customers approaching

Silver Contributor

A reminder the deadline is approaching for Office 365 customers in the UK and South Korea to request a datacenter move.

This is relevant to customers where their Office 365 deployment predates these datacenter regions being available. Once this deadline is past, existing customers will lose this option. The whole process can take up to 24 months but the request must be submitted by the following deadlines:

United Kingdom - September 15, 2017 (All moves completed by September 15, 2019)

South Korea -  October 31, 2017  (All moves completed by October 31, 2018)

Not to bring politics into it but with issues like Brexit and GDPR, UK customers especially should be seriously weighing the options and considering this move.   This move applies to core data. The relevant customers will have had notice in the message center that this option is available.

I have written a quick TechNet Wiki article with more details - How to Change Office 365 Data Center Regions or just go straight to Moving core data to new Office 365 datacenter regions. Customers can check their data location from the Organization profile in the Admin center:

New customers or Office 365 tenants created after the availability of the new datacenter region will have their core customer data stored at rest in the new datacenter region automatically. The UK region has been available since September 2016.

One last reminder, UK Office 365 customers on-boarded prior to September 2016, have exactly one week to request a datacenter move.  I'd expect most qualifying customers to have taken Microsoft up on this offer, with uncertainties around Brexit and GDPR etc. being factors.
