Multiple domains

I have an Office 365 setup with 5 mailboxes and my domain is an .org.

What we have found is that a number of people when sending in donations, they address it to xyz.com instead of xyz org.

Is the solution, to purchase another domain with the same name, but that ends in .com. Then add that to the existing 365 account.

Then the question is, do I need 5 more mailboxes (which each mailbox increases the monthly charge, or can I receive the email sent to the xyz.com by making that an alias of my xyz.org?

As long as you have verified the .com domain, you can add it as additional (secondary or even primary) alias to your existing mailboxes. Dont forget you will need to also configure any DNS records accordingly.
