Domain not Available on Office 365, but not registered.

We are looking at purchasing a domain for our company, and wanted to do it through Office 365 as we use outlook for our emailing. I note, however, that when entering the domain we want to check for availability, it comes back as already taken, but when I enter the same domain into, the domain is available. Can you let me know how to proceed from here as we want to register the domain through Office 365 Directly.

I suggest to give them a ring and verify if the domain is already added to a tenant. You can try to reach them out via Contact support for business product - Admin help . They might give an answer.
