Columns applicable to Sharepoint Online Folders?

Hello, quick question(that I have not been able to google the answer for). I like the idea of using columns to segregate out data, BUT why cant it be used for the folders themselves? I work in an industry with heavy document use and this could really help, but adding that data to each file at a time is tedious. Any advice would be appreciated.

You can, it is just called a Document Set. It is essentially a advanced folder content type.
