AutoSave and compatibility mode

It was recently brought to my attention that when opening documents from the cloud (i.e. OneDrive for business or SharePoint sites) into desktop applications such as word, the autosave feature was turned off when the document was opened in compatibility mode. If the document format was from older versions such as 2007, the AutoSave feature isn't turned on automatically. Is there a way to bulk-change the old doc formats into newer office versions or a way to ensure all opened docs have thr AutoSave feature turned on?
