Introducing 'Follow in inbox' and other improvements for managing group emails in Outlook

Brass Contributor

If some clicks "Follow in inbox" ... message also comes to Inbox...

Question: if you read the item from your Inbox (not from Group mailbox), the status would get changed to Read or in Group the status would remain Unread?

Same for the reply, if you reply from your Inbox, the reply will appear as a thread under Group mailbox?

Hi @Waseem Qureshi - thanks for looking into this feature.

"Question: if you read the item from your Inbox (not from Group mailbox), the status would get changed to Read or in Group the status would remain Unread?"

Short answer to this is: Not yet. But we are working towards correcting this behavior so that if you Read a message in your Inbox, that message would also be marked as Read in the Group's shared space.

Long Answer - at the moment, the Groups shared space does not have the capability to mark a message as "Read". We currently mark the whole conversation as "Seen" as soon as you visit the Group and navigate away from it. That is the reason why the count in your left navigation pane against that group goes back to 0 every time you navigate away from the group. Good news is that we are working towards changing that behavior and soon you would be able to mark an individual message as Read inside the Groups shared space! The work to sync Inbox and Groups shared space would be done post that. So please be patient and expect that coming your way soon.

"Same for the reply, if you reply from your Inbox, the reply will appear as a thread under Group mailbox?"

Yes. Any email with a group in To: or Cc: line would be added to the Group mailbox.

@Ravin Sachdeva Has the functionality of O365 Groups changed? We receive internal emails that are sent to the group as a copy to the group inbox (whether members are following or not), but external emails are only delivered to members following the group. Is this an expected behavior?

@Stephen Daughters - can you please elaborate on your scenario? What do you mean when you say internal and external?

Having more information would help me understand your issue in more detail and provide a solution.

Thanks!

@Ravin Sachdeva Thanks for responding. I posted the full scenario here: https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/Office-365-Groups/External-Email-Delivery-to-O365-Group-Inbox...

Internal emails mean from our domain (hosted by O365 & same tenant), external means from outside our domain (we were testing with gmail accounts).

Hi @Ravin Sachdeva

I have not worked with the Group function before and I'm a person that just can't stand having notifications of unread emails.

It seems, that the issue with the count in the left navigation pane going back to 0 has been fixed, but the marking emails "read" in groups or inbox when you've read them in the other still doesn't seem to be available?

Given that this response is from over 4 years ago, I'm wondering whether there is an option by now to achieve this, or if the best would be to disable the "follow in inbox" option to avoid reading the same email twice?

Thanks in Advance
