Upgrade path for BC Team Members

Copper Contributor

Hi @LicensingConcierge2,

Is it possible to upgrade an existing BC Team member license to Essentials or Premium?

Currently, Partner Centre does not allow this upgrade and the matrix does not include this which I think doesn't make any sense.

Can you or anyone confirm if this upgrade can be done via MS Support?

Many Thanks.

Business Central (BC) Team Members is a different license, while BC Essentials & Premium are  different versions of basically the same license.

That said, I believe you'd have to purchase the licenses that you want at the end of the current term. As a friendly reminder, you cannot have a mix of Essentials & Premium licenses.

If you'll allow me to dig a bit more, I can certainly update this post to confirm.

BC Team Member is just a low level, light access, license for Business Central for access into the same instance as users with a full license.

Why then would Microsoft not allow upgrades from BC Team Member to a full Essentials or Premium license?

For example. A user joins the company as an administrator and only requires basic, Team Member, access to BC. They get promoted and now need an Essentials or Premium license in their new role.

This should be an allowed upgrade scenario, either via Partner Center or by raising a support request with Microsoft.

I've discussed this & can confirm that my original thought is correct...there is no upgrade from BC Teams to BC Essentials/Premium.

For NCE, since the upgrade that you want to do is not listed, then you should turn off auto-renew for the subscription, wait for it to come to an end, and then purchase the required licenses for the customer.

The NCE Handbook also confirms this (find this handbook in Partner Center).

Hi @Nick_Beacroft

Unfortunately, I cannot answer the "why", but your example is a very realistic one!  You have me interested in finding out how this would be resolved.

My first thought is to go ahead and turn off the auto renew for BC Teams, but also purchase the BC Essentials/Premium license as an additional user...what do you think?
