I imagine that many users have made this request. But can you add a button that makes the keyboard appear on the portal? I think you have one of the best virtual reality portals out there, for all the customization options. But you have implemented that the keyboard only comes out when an inputText is detected, but this is not only necessary for when an inputText is detected, you may want to use it for several things, even the option to appear when this inputText is detected fails.
