UPDATED 05/07/19: The latest update (1.56) now lets you flag emails in your personal Microsoft-hosted account, e.g. Hotmail, Outlook or Live.com. The article has been edited to reflect this.

Microsoft To-Do is always here to help you plan your day
, but sometimes an inbox full of urgent emails can get in the way of careful planning. Don’t worry, with our latest update, you won't have to juggle your emails and your task list—you can now add your flagged emails to To-Do, giving you one unified view of what you need to accomplish today.

Flag your emails and see them in To-DoFlag your emails and see them in To-Do

Set up your day

Like to triage your email when you first arrive at the office? Now, as you get to the emails that need a reply or need to be worked on you can flag them and carry on, knowing that they’ll be waiting for you when you open To-Do. If it's an email you need to deal with urgently then you can flag it with a high priority, and when you open To-Do you'll see that it's been starred as important.

Plan your day with My DayPlan your day with My Day

Once you have worked through all your emails you can open To-Do and start planning your day—you’ll find all your flagged emails in the Flagged Email list. Want to work on it today? Right-click on the task and add it to “My Day”—giving you a more coherent view of what your day will look like and what you can accomplish. And if you don’t have the bandwidth for it today, then add a due date or a reminder to deal with it later. Break your tasks into stepsBreak your tasks into steps

Get to work on your email

It’s time to get to work ticking off that list. Click on the flagged email task and you’ll find a preview of the email and a button to take you to the Outlook website, or your mobile app, where you can see the full email and reply to it. Not ready to reply to it just yet? Jot down some ideas in the notes section or break down your task into Steps.

If you are halfway through writing an email and get pulled away to a meeting, flag the draft email and it will also show up in To-Do, reminding you that it still needs to get ticked off when you get back to your desk.

Get started

Let’s get you started, to enable flagged email you need to sign in to To-Do with the same account that you use for email (it must be a work or school account, or a Microsoft-hosted personal account, e.g. Hotmail, Outlook or Live.com). An alert will pop up asking if you want to show the Flagged Email list. And, just like that, your flagged email will start pulling through to To-Do.

Now, we don’t want to overwhelm you with a lot of out-of-date email, so we will only import up to 10 flagged email from the last two weeks. Want to see more than that? You can re-flag any that you want to see in To-Do and they will also turn up in the Flagged Email smart list.

We want to hear from you

As always, we’d like to hear from you—tell us what you think of our latest feature in the comments below, on Twitter or on Facebook

Awesome. I've been waiting for this! Keep up the good work.

Good news. I have been waiting for this. But it doesn't seem to work very well. I can see the new "Flagged email"-list, but it is empty. Tried flagging a few more emails but still nothing in the list.

Microsoft

@Tomasrq That's strange, which platform is this on?

Copper Contributor
@Tomasrq I had the same issue. Restarting the app fixed things. Windows 10 version.
Copper Contributor
All the flagged emails have a due date for yesterday in To-Do for me. WIndows 10 version.
Microsoft

When will this be available in Android?

Copper Contributor

This is a great update. Is this rolling out slowly? I am running 1.52.1903.7002 on windows but the smart list isn't showing up on the windows app or online? I also still don't have the to-do bar integration in my outlook.com email despite having the new to-do logo in the bottom left.

Microsoft

@dhke86 Thanks for the feedback, we'll take a look into it.

Microsoft

@Ella Lesser If you have a work and school account then you can enable it on Windows or at to-do.office.com
The list will then show up on Android.

Copper Contributor

@Polly DavidsonPlease ignore my comment I see now it has to be a work or school account. My bad I am using a personal one

Copper Contributor

This is great functionality! It is super fast in syncing between devices/cloud! A question, is this coming to personal Office 365 accounts as well?

Brass Contributor

THANK YOU!

This was for me the missing feature (and I trust for most folks using Office 365). It works pretty well.

Please, one suggestion to make it "perfect": Allow us to open emails in Outlook (or in our default email app), don't force the webmail.

Brass Contributor

@Polly Davidson I am using it in the web browser on a Windows 10 computer. https://to-do.office.com

I can see the list but the flagged emails won't show up. Same thing in the android app. The list is there but it is empty.

Copper Contributor

@Tomasrq Are you using a school or work account, personal accounts does not seem to work at this stage! It works for me on the web, logged in with my work account.

Brass Contributor

@JontePojke Im using my work account. And i did get the option to activate the flagged email sync. And the list was created just fine.  But no emails are synced.

Brass Contributor

I could activate it.

It works but only new ones.

i have whole list of todo in outlook but only 3 are showing in todo app.

Only today maybe thats normal ?

Regards,

David

@Polly Davidson @JontePojke

Don't know why but it suddenly started working. It went in to settings and turned it off an then on again. Don't know if that had anything to do with it but a few minutes later a lot of flagged mail started showing up as tasks in the to-do-list.

Microsoft

@Tomasrq @David Lambrecht It will only sync up to ten flagged emails from the last two weeks. Are your flagged emails older than that? If you flag a new one or re-flag one does that show up?
The reason we don't want to sync older ones is because we don't want to import over a lot of old forgotten tasks and overwhelm people. But any emails that you flag or re-flag should show up.

Brass Contributor

@Polly Davidson  thanks for the reply.

Yes they are older then last two weeks.

Some are just things i need to do with no date.

So if i undrstand correct if i reflag them they will all apear.

If so i can live with that but dont see a reason why only 2 weeks ....

Todo need to be done so need to be in the list is supose.

Brass Contributor

I just made a new list in the ToDO app.

It apeared in outlook but then it disapeared ?

Would also be nice to set private todo's

Copper Contributor

Nice!  I had created a Quick Step in Outlook to add Tasks to To-Do, but this is much easier and the email body text is more nicely formatted. Thanks!!  Now, if only To-Do items created with Flow could be added to "My Day"........  :smiling_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Copper Contributor

@Polly Davidson thanks a lot!

But, @Polly Davidson, why it doesn't sync the Due Date?

Copper Contributor

@Polly Davidson  I am seeing multiple todos created for threaded conversations.

Copper Contributor

Thanks for this feature. Could you please allow sorting of the flagged emails by the due date. The emails seem to not be able to be sorted, but default to be grouped by the day they were flagged, not the flag type and due date. Also, would be great to be able to open the email in the natrive Outlook client on whatever device you are on, rather than be taken to the OWA web app.

Also, very frustrating to have to re-flag emails to get them to appear. Maybe an option to import all would be a better solution?

Copper Contributor

Is the an iOS, iPhone, iPad version, or has MTD given up on iOS support...?

Brass Contributor

This worked great for me!

But, when I complete the task, should it not mark it as completed in outlook?

Copper Contributor

Can I somehow open flagged mails from shared mailboxes in To-Do? Because that would be the greatest thing ever ;)

Copper Contributor

This is a great new feature! Looking forward to trying this out.

Copper Contributor

@RayVra Are you asking if there is an iOS version of To-Do?  https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/microsoft-to-do/id1212616790?mt=8  My version of the app (1.52, build 190301.1823) running on my iPhone also has the Flagged Email feature included (once I enabled it in the web UI).

Copper Contributor

I've been waiting for this too. But when I first went into it today there was nothing there then I refreshed my browser (Edge) and one flagged message appeared, then did it again and another appeared up until about 8 refreshes. I then flagged 3 messages for today and all appeared without refreshing the browser. Flagged a few more and they didn't appear..

Seems very hit and miss ..

Iron Contributor

Amazing.

@Simen Ødegård: yes, tasks marked as flagged / completed should synchronize between To-Do and Outlook. I just tested it, and it worked for me (using Outlook desktop). It did take a few seconds to update though, but that's to be expected really.

@Polly Davidson: any plans to let users choose which version of Outlook to be opened when pressing "Open in Outlook" in To-Do? At the moment OWA seems to be the default, but I'd really love it if I could choose Outlook Desktop instead. Loving it so far! Great job! Smiley Happy

Copper Contributor

Yipeee - I've been waiting for this for ages as I'm a heavy user of tasks in Outlook but want a mobile sychronised version.  However looking at my To Do list via the browser,  it's seem stuck 'synchronization in progress' and it has only brought over 1 flagged email so far (an hour later).

Why limit to 10 flagged email and 14 days? I typically have 150+ tasks (a mix of tasks and flagged emails) at a time, all categorized and with due dates.  I want to be able to see this online and on mobile through my O365.

Will To Do get there eventually?  Is it meant to replace 'tasks' in outlook?

Thanks

Copper Contributor

Got it.  I can add To-Do to quick status on the lock screen, but not the detailed status.  Could you put that on your to-do list?

Copper Contributor

Missing feature: turn flagged emails off.  I don't like how all the flagged emails end up at the top of my "planned" list, and it doesn't let us change the due date (or remove it).  So I'd like to turn this feature off!

Copper Contributor

The details of my flagged mails does not show in the desktop app only on the web app. Is this standard?

Copper Contributor

This is a welcome feature, which I've been waiting for as it is more efficient not to have to duplicate email based tasks in other applications. However, To Do does not seem to import older flagged emails that have not yet been dealt with, only those that are most recent. I'm sure I'm not alone in having a few of those to deal with in my inbox. Could you add integration of historic flagged emails? Perhaps separated into an expandable sub-section, in order to keep current tasks clearer and more manageable? Thank you.

Microsoft

@JontePojke It will also be coming to personal accounts in the future—stay tuned!

Microsoft

@David Lambrecht If you reflag them then should reappear. The two weeks limit is just for the very first import. From now on they will stay in your list until you complete or delete them. Are you still having issues with disappearing lists?

Microsoft

@DoCode If you flag the email with a due date that should pull through. Some people are seeing a bug with the date changing, but we're working on that. Does the date not pull through for you at all?

Microsoft

@Eldo Rajan Did you flag the email from your phone? We're working on a bug that pulls each email from a thread through as a task.

Microsoft

@RayVra We certainly haven't given up on iOS. You have to enable it on Windows or web for now and then the flagged emails will pull through into iOS and Android. Let us know if it doesn't work for you.

Microsoft

@EdSygrove Sorry to hear that you had issues with it. Is it still acting strangely for you?

Microsoft

@Tormod Solem Slupphaug It's on the list. We couldn't give you a timeframe for it yet though. Glad you like it!

Microsoft

@Shoqz It's not on the roadmap at the moment. But we have passed it on to the team to take a look into. :smiling_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Microsoft

@HelenDay Oh no! Are you still seeing issues? The limitation is just for the initial import. You'll be able to have your 150+ tasks from now on, but you will need to reflag them for them to pull through.

Microsoft

@marclal You can turn the feature off in your settings in Windows and web. Let me know which platform you're on if you can't find the setting. You should be able to change the due date in the detail view of each task. Can you not do that?

Microsoft

@marijke_devos It should show up in all the apps as long as you've enabled it and you're signed in with the same account. Can you double-check that you have the latest update of the Windows app - version 1.52?

Copper Contributor

@Polly Davidson no flag emails with e.g. tomorrow then it displayed in MS To-Do always as 'Due Today'!

Copper Contributor

@Polly Davidson Thanks.  I found the setting.  And now it does let me change the due date.  It didn't the first few days.
