I keep getting an error message say that the file is locked whenever I try to delete a file from Teams.  I deleted the file from the Conversation.  The file has been closed for about 45 minutes.  I also tried delete from SharePoint but I get an error stating that "The file is currently checked out or locked for editing by another user"...which it is not.

Is there some default lock on the file?  Any ideas on how to get this file deleted?  Thanks.

Try opening the file via SharePoint, and see if it shows who has the file open, it'll usually say someone else is editing. If they actually opened the file in an older client when you try to open it should also say who has the file open for editing.

There is a timer to release the files, I want to say it's 10 minutes, but could be 5. If you waited 45 seems someone has it open elsewhere.

If you don't see anyone else editing the file then also make sure you quit Teams maybe it's got it opened in the background or something in a web process.

I opened in SharePoint and it showed me who was in it.  I checked with the user and he was not in the file, so I asked him to close out of Teams.  He closed the Desktop application, closed Internet Explorer, did a force stop of the desktop application and it still shows him editing the document.  I then went in and delete all the conversations around the file but still nothing.

I will wait a bit longer but there has to be a better way to do this from Teams, right?

Thanks.

it's likely not teams doing it, make sure they don't have office open in the background or a browser open that could have the file open. Chrome sometimes open in the background might have it stuck etc. Honestly, maybe just have them reboot :). Wait 10 min, then you should be good.

The file no longer says it is being edited within SharePoint but I still cannot delete the file.  I am having him reboot his machine.  This is crazy.  I have another user trying to delete a file from within Teams having the same issue.  I am NOT going to tell her that she has to reboot her machine every time she needs to delete a file. :)

Is it true that you need to delete any conversations related to a shared file before you can delete it from Teams?

No, you don't have to, I've never had an issue deleting files in Teams. Seems you guys have connectivity issues or something going on keeping these files open or something kind of process going on that's latching onto them.

The conversations are static thou, so if you delete the underlying file, then anyone trying to access the file via conversation will get a file not exist error since the conversation isn't link to the file technically.

The user rebooted and still can't delete.  I have a call into MSFT to see if they can help.

Thanks.

If you waited 10 minutes and still cannot delete, then have that user open the file themselves. Then close it cleanly. This might remove the lock as well.

I also cannot delete a file from the team I have just set up.  I created it as a test file, and no one but myself has seen it/accessed it.  When I hit delete it pops up with the same error message that I read earlier in this feed.  I have opened it in SharePoint and also tried deleting here.  I have also re-started my computer.  However, the same error message keeps appearing. It is frustrating.

I waited for a lot longer than 10 mins. I even tried the next day and still no luck.

Good luck ~ ^_^.

I have the same problem, the only thing is...I am the only user and have not shared the document. It keeps saying the document is locked by me!

Just had the same thing - user then opened the file, made a change. Saved and closed Excel (it was a workbook). Then deleted without a complaint ... Previously she was getting the file locked error ...

We began running into this issue recently as well and I managed to find a solution elsewhere - apparently it has to do with some sort of contention between SharePoint and the locally cached copies. I can confirm that this solution worked for me.

"On the computer having the issue, search for "Office Upload Center" and run it.  Click Settings, check the box for "Delete files from the Office document cache when they are closed"

Found on Spiceworks: https://community.spiceworks.com/topic/2144925-sharepoint-file-locked-for-edit?utm_source=copy_paste...

I have the same problem. I also tried to sign out of Teams and sign in again - without any luck.

I tried this solution, but it did not work for me. In the dialogbox I also chose to clear the present cache (the last 14 days).
Your soution suggested that it is a local problem (cache related to your own computer ?) but It might be a server problem - where the status on the file is set to be locked/in use. Is there anyway to access this ?

Another way I have found to resolve this is to have a Team Owner - go to the SharePoint doc library.  Manually check out the file and then check it back in.

I still have the same problem, any solution?

Worked for me as well! Thanks!

I am having this issue as well. I am the only user. It happens when I try to delete and rename files. My question is: What can be done to stop/prevent this from happening in the first place?
