I discovered today that you can't set Teams as the default app for the URL:Tel protocol.

 

Like an email address, you can click a phone number in your web browser and Skype will pop up and call the number with the URL:Tel protocol. Today I set that association to Teams and when I clicked a phone number, Teams popped up but I received an error: "Sorry, we're unable to complete the call. There was an issue finding the person you were trying to reach."

 

I have the phone set, and can make and take calls to and from outside lines. This limitation just pumped the brakes on my effort to move my office to Teams.

Not quiet sure this is supported. I know sip click to call is supposed to work now but not sure about dial. I will need to test it and report back.
I should add; this is testing dialing a number from Dynamics 365.

I think by now you should be able to change it by going into the 'Default apps per protocol' settings on Windows 10 under Settings … Apps .. Default Apps.

I'm experiencing the same issue when testing click-to-dial from Dynamics 365 using Microsoft Teams...

I could be wrong - but I thought I heard in a Microsoft Ignite presentation (regarding Teams) that this feature isn't supported yet (may need to continue using Skype For Business in the meantime.)

I tested this now just by entering the tel: in the addressbar in Edge browser and the Team client opened and asked me If i wanted to call that number. I typed tel:+46890510

Just to make sure, you are able to call number directly from your Teams client? 

The problem is the format of the URL when clicking the number in Dynamics: A new tab opens with "tel:%2b49123456789" instead of "tel:+49123456789". When I manually change the %2b to + its working even with Teams.

I just created a ticket for MS, it would be great if you could do that, too ;)

In tel:%2b49123456789 %2b is the HEX code for the + sign. I tried this from my browser with Skype and Skype takes the %2b and converts it to + so I can call the number but Teams can't do that, it just gives an Sorry-error. Let's hope MS can fix that after your ticket.

There's more to this issue - Teams needs to recognize your country code that you're in and prefix automatically - if it gets a standard 10 digit US number you get an error

Also, the protocol redirection should understand multiple protocols including tel: dial: callto: ucdial: sip: and skype: through a setting so that you can properly configure all applications and browsers as well as Windows - without this, there is no true CTI for Teams and this will limit adoption. I know asking for TAPI would just be too much but I wish that were there too.

I am finding that Microsoft Teams is missing from the list for the TEL: protocol, even though the App has been installed. Is there a recommendation on how to get it to show?

Issue with this is, Teams doesn't allow itself for the tel: protocol. Not sure why yours works and ours don't but def. not available :p

I find that it works is the link is in an email or a typical website. It's the telephone links specifically in Dynamics 365 where it fails. It's preventing me from moving my office to Teams. 

But I guess you have the same problem as @timokli reported that dynamics formats the phone number wrong. Instead of user a + sign dynamics changes the + sign to %2b (HEX for plus sign) and Teams doesn't convert the HEX code back. 

Hello Linus, I am not seeing Microsoft Teams or simply Teams when I go to the Set defaults by app setting screen. So I need to understand why it is not on these lists.
I am running Version 1809 (OS Build 17763.253). I have a colleague that is able to see it and has associated with Teams. He is able to use the phone number from MS Dynamics with the latest UI update.

Have you tried to uninstall and install Teams again? As I understand it Teams should register in windows that Teams can handle that protocol.

I am still waiting for an answer of MS for the HEX-Code bug.

 

In the meantime I just found our a weird behavior: When the MS Teams client is completely closed and I click on a telephone number in Dynamics, the Teams client is starting, and the call is correctly working! This only works exactly 1 time. When MS Teams is running, the second click on a number is no more working.

 

Maybe its a problem with the dial plan which is loaded on starting the MS Teams client, and maybe this dial plan need some time to get loaded, and that is why the first call is working. maybe the dial plan in that case is not ready... I will do some deeper tests.

 

Our organisation is also trialling the call functionality within Teams.  Not being able to call via a record in Dynamics 365 is a major frustration and blocker to wider adoption.  Looking forward to hearing an update.

I tried it in these szenarios, both are working:

  • Windows 10, Dynamics in Edge, MS Teams Version 1.2.00.4664
  • Mac OS X, Dynamics in Safari, MS Teams Mac Version 1.2.00.3961
