Student chat disabled?

Copper Contributor

Hi there,

I’ve started testing and setting up Teams for my education customer. I’ve gotten reports that teachers have a “This chat has been disabled. You can’t send send a message , but can view past messages.” Message when going to message a student.

I have tried re-assigning policies but nothing that I’ve tried has worked. Any resolutions?

Help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

EDIT: This issue only appears on the iPad app version of Teams. Version#:3.10.0

@Jmhadaller What are you trying to achieve with policies, and what is currently set? Chat is controlled through the messaging policy. As well as being something that can be turned on and off, there is also the option for supervised chats, where pupils can only chat if a teacher is in the conversation, see Use supervised chats - Microsoft Teams | Microsoft Docs.

Please consider that any changes made topolicies can take a good while to propagate fully, in my experience enabling chat can be 3-4 days due to multiple layers of caching in some clients.

I am trying to solve the mystery of why the teacher cannot message their student on their iPad but can do so on all other devices. Teams has been uninstalled and reinstalled several times. The teacher has logged out and in several times. I have shared images below of my issue.
