Some users are unable to see other users in Microsoft Teams

Recently, ive noticed that I'm unable to see some users in Microsoft Teams (any new users created in the last month) - But those users are able to see a random amount of users in the company also.

 

Anyone else running into this? is this a bug?

Solution

Make sure you and your users aren't using the top search bar to look up users. I've had so many people use that to try and chat with people and that's basically using search for stuff you have loaded up in Teams. So it'll only return people you have in common in Teams your part of or have previously chatted with recently.

Use the "New Chat" button and the to: field when needing to reach out to users to chat with etc.

Just going off assumption cause I've seen this multiple times, but may be different scenario :).

Seems like /who using who bot does a pretty good job of finding users even obscure ones who wouldn't be anywhere near my office graph.   Also from a couple minutes of playing with it /org followed by a user name does too, even finding far flung users that I would not have any had any contact with.

 

/org was not able to find people created today like you are describing.  I'm guessing it's an indexing problem

@Deleted about the Teams top search bar: should be fine to use it for people search. Currently the search results are divided into three tabs: Messages, People and Files. I verified my search result from top bar and chat To: field and the results were identical.

 

We really are having problems finding some people. "We" means multiple users in our organization regardless of their physical location, network or application (Android app, web or desktop all give similar results for a person). "Some" means it's easy to see people are left out from the results.

One person in our IT team had search working fine before, but not today. I verified that I cannot find a certain known active user even by his/her full email address.

 

It doesn't seem like per user problem, as two users can have similar search results (the same people found / missing from the results).

 

We do have a hybrid environment, and the company has multiple on-prem Active Directories. Teams has been set to "Scope directory search in Teams using an Exchange address book policy (ABP)". Microsoft documentation tells that scoping is not supported with hybrid (on-prem Exchange). This is our only clue right now. We don't know yet if the setting makes any difference, but I felt better to write about this now when searching for info about similar problems.

We are seeing the same thing. We are seeing inconsistent behavior when starting a new chat and searching for people. Today I was able to search for Thomas (as an example) and bring up a list of people with Thomas in the name. Later on a different PC I am not seeing the same list and missing someone in particular. Other users are seeing the same thing and starting to report this. We are hybrid Exchange as well but not sure if this is related or not.

 

Would like to understand how all of this works in order to troubleshoot properly.

@CraigC444  SOLVED! We confirmed that the problem was Teams search scoping by Exchange address book policy. We turned that off and by the end of the day searches started working normally for everyone.

 

Why to use directory search scoping? It is beneficial in cases like one tenant, multiple companies: prevent people from company A accidentally searching for company B people. Or at educational cases make distinction between staff and students. Full email still allows searching and contacting. The actual setting is found in Teams admin center:

Org-wide settings -> Teams settings -> Search by name

Scope directory search in Teams using an Exchange address book policy (ABP)

 

We had no address book policies in use, so it was safe to try by turning the option off.
