So convenient in SfB, how do I do it in Teams?

I'm an IT consultant with about 20 small business clients on Office 365. Most of my clients are using Skype for Business and I am connected to them (through federation with my tenant), thus I can easily and instantly see/tag/chat/call/share with any of them. This makes it super easy to support those 300 or so users. I rely on this all day long every day.

Unless I'm missing something Teams doesn't offer such ease. For each client (tenant) I must switch to that client tenant as a Guest in order to see messages etc. Do I have this right? If that's the case I'm very disappointed; that's horribly cumbersome compared to SfB. I'm going to have to go back to email and phone to support my customers!

No, you could do chatt between tenants! If you want the full teams experience you have to get invited or invite to a team itself.
If you are guests on their tenants then yes, when they try to chat with you since you have a contact in their system it will default to that.

You can federate if it's set on both ends enabled for external communication in the admin center you can click new chat, type in their e-mail address and see their precense / chat with them from your tenant, The can do the same too but they have to click on the "Search externally for x" or else it will use the local user you have on their end. If you wern't setup as a guest on all the tenants it would be easier, but you do have the federation there.

The only issue with it, you can't build contact lists with it, you can basically add it to your favorites list under contacts and that's it. Or pin it to recents list on chat.

I've now gone into the Administrator and changed some External Access settings. It kinda works, but not really and it's inconsistent and a real mess. I'll pick this up again next week. Thanks for your input. I'll report back next week.

Thanks for your replies, everyone. It's working slightly better now, though inconsistently.

  • I have External Guests allowed on the tenants, but while I can initiate a chat with someone on A from B, I cannot do so on B from A. Inconsistent, buggy, frustrating.
  • It's a pain that I can't put external chat contacts into groups as I could with SfB. I'm stuck with 150+ contacts under Favorites. At least the search works (which it never did in SfB)
  • It's horrible that Guests in chat are listed by their email address instead of their names as it was in SfB.
  • The inability to make calls or share screens with Guests is a big step backward and a huge problem for me.

I'll keep bashing away on it and hope Microsoft fixes these issues soon.

You can make calls and video calls from federated contacts. Might require teams on both ends but I do it often.

If you want full fidelity with a guest then invite them to your tenant to a team. Then you can add them to contact groups and get full fidelity of the guest account. The only issue with that is they will have to switch tenants when they need to communicate with you so right now I can tell the frustration as some of these things just don’t make sense. If you could easily switch tenants and it worked better that would make sense. But at same time federation should just fully work as well so we don’t.

Thanks for the reply. The requirement for me to switch between my 20 customers (tenants) in order to communicate (beyond basic texting) with clients is a real problem for me.

Guests in Teams:

  • doesn't allow me to group chat
  • no emojis
  • no indication if they are typing a reply
  • no way to tag them for status change (I use that SfB feature A LOT)
  • no text formatting
  • no adjustable control Privacy Relationship (Workgroup, Colleague)
  • no file send/receive (I use that a lot)

There are so many features missing I'm surprised Microsoft considers Teams a "replacement" to SfB.
