Thanks Chris - So, I should now be able to set the Files tab to default sort on Name. Is that correct? I'm having some trouble doing that.

Just checked and at this time still an issue: sort order in Teams files for files is last modified, while in the underlying sharepoint document library it sorts default by filename.
Sorting by name by default is the sane default, hope Microsoft picks this up soon.

@quinnmdq Still not updated in May 2019. This sort of behaviour immediately deters users who are using teams for the first time in our org. Sort should be by name as default, and defaults should be able to be set according to user preference.

Anyone know if that functionality has been implemented yet? It can't be that hard, it's one of the most basic functions of any file browsing system

In the second half of last week my organization began migrating to Teams. I had been excited about the change, but did not realize I couldn't organize the filing system alpha-numerically by default. A two step process every time I navigate to a new folder (sort folder, find file) is double the steps used in file explorer. I didn't realize Teams, which supposedly organizes files, only has beta functionality.

Still not available, in August
A year now I've been using Teams and this basic UI fail has not been fixed

My organization has been an early adopter of Teams and the lack of this functionality is consistently called out by our end users. If you are unable to allow users to set the default sort order themselves my opinion is that you should reset the global behavior to sort on name until the functionality can be added.

@dpassey Oh, it's been well over a year already. There is another thread where @Chris Webb said Share Point integration was in the "near future". That was July 2018. Lies or bull honkey, it's the same to me. I have 85 dissatisfied people that walk up to my desk and ask why Teams navigation is garbage.
$4,800,000,000 in profit in Q2 2019, but they don't have the resources to get this product beyond beta functionality. Way to go MS.

@Chris Webb Heads up to this thread; it appears that Teams now has the ability to preserve sort settings (i.e. if you alpha sort, it stays alpha sorted). I also see a sync button in Teams, so you don't need to go to SharePoint to sync to File Explorer. This looks like the answer to this thread's request. Anyone else seeing this?

@Chris Webb Ok, so I have had the chance to do a little more digging. It looks like the SharePoint integration is live. I also checked out the instructions on SharePoint sorting. I followed the instructions and made a new default view (AlphaSort).
The new view stays listed in the upper corner, but when I navigate between sections, it still defaults to sort by Modified.
If I click AlphaSort and then click it again from the drop down menu, it will apply the correct settings. So it looks like the default settings should be updated, but they are not being applied?
It looks like a lot of the infrastructure to make this work is present, but it is not functioning at this time. Am I missing something or does Microsoft's flagship file storage system still lack the ability to organize things alphabetically?
Microsoft reported $10,700,000,000.00 in profits in Q1 FY20 (Jul-Sep 2019).

@Chris Webb : Just confirming what the comment above you mentioned. Microsoft Teams has finally pushed out the SharePoint updated. However, although Teams gives me an option to set a default view or create a new one in FILES, nothing but the original default view holds if you navigate out of that specific folder. Hoping this is just a bug which is quickly fixed.

@bgrant I found that if I had created a new default view in SharePoint, it would finally 'stick' in Teams if I signed out of Teams and back in.
Even with the new default view, the sort was still stuck on 'Modified' as you suggested.
So I vote for buggy :)
02-07-2020 10:46 AM
@bgrant this really pisses me off. In the past it was (at least) one click on the header to at least make the list sort by name (which should have been the default), now its 4 clicks... because even if you change the sorting (2 clicks!) it does not stick, only the second time it sticks... This bug should be squashed real quick, as productivity is lacking... *big sigh*

What's shameful is Microsoft reporting $11,600,000,000.00 in profits in Q2FY2020. Deliver garbage, don't fix it, charge whatever they want. I guess that's the power of being a monopoly? They clearly have the resources to fix this issue if quality was a concern. Chris, they don't pay you enough to defend them.

This is insane. So, two years of being promised this most basic of feature, and now it's finally implemented... it doesn't work?
02-10-2020 12:07 AM
Essentially, Yes. The fix i see above is still not even implemented in my language (Dutch).
My management has had it and we are moving AWAY from cloud, to many things not working but the cost is 3 times what we paid when it was all on-prem.

@Adam_2019 It's not really a 'dev' issue. You can have thousands of 'devs' (and MS does) but it all comes to a grinding stop if you fire all the testers and make paying customers your 'guinea pigs'. And it's actually a great business model, because all 'burn-outs' are now externalized as well! MS is a very happy company [insert link to MS revenue slides], [insert link to great place to work slides] ;)
<cynical>What ever you do: keep posting on the uservoices, because everything will get better, really!</cynical>.
By the way, as soon as you realize this, you just stop caring and ask for a discount ;)
