Renaming Teams and Channels Can Be Messy, Especially with SharePoint

You can easily rename a team by giving it a new display name, or do the same thing to a channel. But Teams and SharePoint Online have the kind of relationship that's based on tight connections, so renaming team or channel names leaves SharePoint untouched. Site URLs remain unchanged and if you try and fix up the folder names for channels, you can end up with a real mess.

You know what will be interesting is when they enable the Invoke-SPOSiteSwap and you swap a site connected to Teams. Betting that will not be a happy situation :P.

Yes, swapping sites might become interesting when Teams is involved. No doubt the fine people in development will test this scenario thoroughly.

This is why I wish you could prevent renaming for anyone but the Teams admin. There bwere 2 Uservoices I upvoted addressing this, but now that the MS UserVoices are going away, who knows if there will be any traction?
Just gonna add this on the topic as the conversation is really old.

Pairing the channel and the corresponding SharePoint folder name.

@ChristianJBergstrom , That is helpful, but it covers the channels, not the site collection itself.

I know the channel is also the site collection for private channels, but not for standard.

And I agree, this is an old problem, but I'd still like to think it will be solved some day.
