Record when a person has viewed a file

Copper Contributor

Hi All,

First time post here.

I was asked if there was a way to record when an employee has either read a message or has opened a file.

The purpose is to track viewership of messaging. Making sure that everyone has viewed the message.

I wonder if I post a file to the Teams chat, the user clicks on it to open it, then SharePoint would record that and we can then pull an audit trail from SP?

Suggestions are welcome.

Thanks - Erik

Yes, any file activity will be visible in the Unified audit log: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/compliance/audit-log-search?view=o365-worldwide
That's not the same as viewing the message itself though, for that you can use read receipts (but only for 1:1 and group chats): https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/use-read-receipts-for-messages-in-teams-533f2334-32ef-424...
Thanks.
I was not aware of Purview.
