"Share system audio" in a Teams meeting has disappeared

Iron Contributor

Hi, does anyone know what happened to the "share system audio" button in Teams meetings? It was there last week when I led a meeting, but when I had a meeting today it was gone. I haven't changed my audio settings and have been using the same computer.

Documentation for this feature:

Seems someone else has the same issue this week:

My bet is that Microsoft is finding it more of a challenge on Mac to get this to work than on Windows. Audio is handled very differently on Mac. I found a way to potentially make it work using this: https://existential.audio/blackhole/

@Linus Cansby

Thanks for the information! It looks I will have to go back to running the Zoom app inside Teams to be able to do my music classes. What a drag....

I'm on a mac and it is at the top on the bar and the check box is not there. Can't figure out where to look in settings to get it.@NielsNijmegen

Sharing system audio is not currently available on the MacOS version of Teams.

@danilomezzadri I'm curious how to get the Zoom to work inside the Teams? My school district requires us to use Teams but I feel like Zoom has so many features that teams is lacking. This might be a great option.

@ydiaz025 ,

I added Zoom as an App. You should be able to find it on the left side bar in the "..." icon below Files.

You might have to set up a free Zoom account, but I am not sure about that.
Zoom is far better than Teams for video conferencing. Specially the Audio components and the ability to share videos with audio.

Hope this helps!

On a Mac you can achieve this using audio extensions like Blackhole or Soundflower (now supports MacOS Catalina). Both are free and open source but there are paid for alternatives out there too.

An basic example of how this can work:
1. Install Soundflower
2. Set Soundflower (2ch) as your system sound output device in MacOS sound preferences (the app your using to play video will now send it’s sound to Soundflower instead of your normal system speakers).
3. In Teams you go to settings, set Soundflower as your Mic and then share your screen and play the video (everyone will see your video through the screen share and hear it via Soundflower).

One issue is you won’t hear the audio yourself. That can be fixed using MIDI setting on the Mac as follows:

1. Open the Audio MIDI Setup app on your Mac.
2. Create a Multi-Output Device by clicking on the plus sign in the bottom left of the screen
3. Select your system speakers from the tick list on the right (do this first)
4. Select Soundflower (2ch) from the same list
5. Check the Drift Correction option for Soundflower (2ch)
6. Rename your multi-output device if you want.

Now set your system to play audio to this multi-output device. In your MS Teams settings keep your speakers as your systems speakers (don’t use the multi-output device otherwise you’ll generate echos) and set your mic as Soundflower (2ch). Everyone on the call will now hear your systems sounds, including the sounds from the video when you play it. You will also hear the system sounds though your own speakers.

Don’t forget to switch your mic back to your real mic when you want to speak again.

@Bynum Hoekstra

Yes.  I can share my screen, but the toggle for share system audio has disappeared. Thanks MS.  That kinda messed up my lessons today.

@Linus Cansby do we have that option in mac?

@Linus Cansby That little audio icon does not appear on my screen at all. I see the other buttons but not that one. Any other suggestions?

@pcarson123 I assume you are on a Mac cause of this? Mac still hasn't had this feature added to it per roadmap: Microsoft 365 Roadmap | Microsoft 365

@Bynum Hoekstra It's very frustrating that Microsoft stopped to support sharing audio from a Mac. I just saw this article (Jan 2021) and it looks like this feature is now available in the "public preview" version. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/share-sound-from-your-computer-in-a-teams-meeting-or-live...

I tried to update my Teams software and it doesn't work. I can't get that preview version, which is supposed to support that feature again. In the Office 365 Admin Center, there is a toggle to enable "preview features" in Teams. It's enabled, but it doesn't change anything. I contacted support, I hope they will be able to help. But it's great to see that Microsoft finally did something. You can also see the release note here (look for Version 2101: January 13) => https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/officeupdates/current-channel-preview

I hope Microsoft will support virtual cameras soon. All other video-related software supports virtual cameras, except Teams for Mac. That would allow people to use software like OBS, to have better visual (green screen, banners, logo, etc.).

@Tommy1976

If you use Teams on the Web in Chrome you can get your virtual cameras back I think.

The option is back! Yeah! I think there is a delay between when we activate the toggle in the Admin Center, and when Teams realizes it should propose the option. I restarted Teams a couple of times, and I saw the "preview" option in the "About" menu. I did a quick test, sharing my screen with audio, and it seems to work (at first view), but I'll do more tests to make sure everything is good.

Note that the version number will remain the same. I still see version 1.3.00.33671 (2021-01-04), but in the About menu, I see "Public Preview" and "Developer Preview", and both options are checked.
Thanks Will for the info. I always use the Teams client, which should be better than the browser version, as it can access all computer's resources. I'll give it a try (web version), to see if it works. I hope Microsoft will enable that feature in the client version.
This exact issue came up today, the instructor couldn't share audio from a PowerPoint app on Teams on a web browser (Chrome). Thanks for the heads up but will that change anytime soon Linus Canby?

@GbengaKoleoso Share system audio using Teams in a web browser (Chrome or Edge) is coming very soon, see

https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/microsoft-365/roadmap?featureid=84175

The interface to share is a little different, generated by the browser, but when this arrives the Share System Audio option is at the bottom left of the share screen.

Others have said this so it might not be very helpful: the functionality is back and working in the desktop client and has been for some time. Sharing a PowerPoint might be somewhat different, but for "regular" meetings the toggle is at the top of the "share" screen where it says Share Content. There's a toggle that says "share computer sound."

Still the same issue, no option to share system audio for Mac Web as of July 2022.

@Hobyvh I think that is more Apple's fault than Microsoft's. They make it ridiculously difficult to route system audio back into their OS.
