Push to talk for Samsung Xcover Pro

Copper Contributor

We have a couple of the Samsung Xcover Pro devices now and I do not see any updates on when the push to talk will be available? All the news from back in January is the same, any eta on when this might make it into production?

Hello @Yzlance   There is a Uservoice feedback forum item that may give you the answer you are seeking - be sure to vote if you want to see a feature.  If not, you can search to see the other push to talk entries that users have requested.  https://microsoftteams.uservoice.com/forums/555103-public/suggestions/18837436-allow-users-to-enable...

I am talking about a different push to talk

the walkie talkie version of push to talk, not muted until I push a button push to talk

Looks like it's available now.  You can assign the app through the teams admin console.

@Yzlance We just bought this phone to test with Teams as well as there is ZERO information on how to configure the PTT specific feature with Teams walkie talkie feature.  The only option i can see is configuring the button to open Teams, but that's not what it's designed to do.

We're supposed to be able to click the PTT button this phone and it will work as a walkie talkie in the Teams app (even when locked).  The only way I can use the walkie talkie feature is to open the app, click on the walkie talkie then the channel I need then click on the screen to talk.  That's what every other phone can do.  What specifically on this Samsung XCover Pro with this very specific PTT feature for Microsoft Teams exclusively can do this?  No details anywhere.

I was able to get the button working by following these steps.  During the process you have to sign up for knox trial unfortunately.  Everything else is done through Intune.  https://insights.samsung.com/2020/06/29/how-to-program-buttons-on-your-galaxy-xcover-pro/

@Kurt Wait what?  Where does it say that in order to use a button on this new phone that we have to buy InTune and Knox???  Just to use the side button?

Microsoft has now told me that Walkie Talkie is only in preview mode and isn't supported yet sent me KB articles from Samsung, not  Microsoft, saying we have to use InTune in order to enable the Walkie Talkie feature, yet it's already there.

 I was sent this https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/roadmap?filters=Microsoft%20Teams&searchterms=57157

So I'm confused as to why we need both Knox and InTune to use the PTT feature when Microsoft is now saying it's not even yet available.  I really wish there's actually software companies that can help customers with its products.  It's so frustrating.

It's in public preview so it hasn't been generally released but you can enable it.   You have to enable it through the Teams Admin Center.  https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/MicrosoftTeams/walkie-talkie

After that, wait a while and the walkie talkie feature will show up in the Android App.  To get the button working, you have to follow the other link I posted previously.  Because it's a hardware button, I think the requirement to use knox to configure the button probably has more to do with Samsung than Microsoft.  Really you just need a knox license that you add to intune.  Everything is still done through intune.

@luvsql

By the way, you can use the button and in settings change it to open any app but to have it do a function within an app like push to talk within the teams app, that's where the need to use intune\knox comes into play.  I think that's because it's an OEM level type of change to the button.  Again, it could be more of a Samsung requirement to use MDM software (intune or similar) along with a knox license.
