Presence Incorrect in Teams

We are currently migrating from on-prem Exchange and SfB to Office 365.  We have hybrid Exchange configured, but are moving away from Skype, so are not configuring hybrid Skype.  Teams is able to read the mailbox calendars (Meetings button appears, populates calendar info), but often times free/busy does NOT match the meetings.  I've also noticed that meetings that are accepted / busy show up as tentative in Teams, which is not flipping the presence into BUSY.  We have other random users that are not receiving the MEETINGS button on their teams client, and others that are using multiple instances and only receiving the button on one client.

 

I've also noted that of the meetings in my calendar, I can see who's accepted / declined meetings only in my meetings I've organized, but the data does not populate on others' meetings, rather all users show as unknown except the organizer.

 

And for reference, we're running Teams in island mode so that our beta group can test Teams as it will be when we go live.  (Beta group is around 200 users now).

well the first big mistake is using islands. You should be sitting in Skype only with your testers sitting with Teams Only it will fester into a mess of you leave islands on.

Also are all your Teams testers mailboxes in 365? Teams works better when that is the case.
Also when you set modes you’ll want to do it with power shell if possible. Using the admin center is hit or miss recently.

So our testers' mailboxes are located on-prem still, due to issues outside our control (legal / compliance / governance is driving this).  I've seen the other posts about it being a possible bug, but there's no black and white answer I can provide to management.

Far as I know exchange online is required for presence integration. I’ll see if I can confirm.
Microsoft addressing as of Jan 19th, 2018. That's over a year ago. Please tell me they've found a solution since that point.

I know this is an old topic. It's an old topic on UserVoice too, but people are still replying there saying it doesn't work. But here you go (a post here in Tech Community) opened in 2020 and still getting replies saying presence is NOT working:

Like the users there and in the UV, we DO already have presence enabled in Teams.
Yet I just heard my coworker complaining on a call presence in Teams was showing him away when he was available.
