Phone app and old phone numbers

I used Teams with a work account and I used the Teams app on my phone. To log in to the app you have to associate your phone number with the account so I did.

I left that job and they shut down the account. But now Microsoft Account Support tell me I can't associate the same phone number with a different account.

Doesn't this mean I effectively can't use the Teams app now without a new phone number? Or is there a way to log in without the number?

What did you use the phone number for, was it to call or to sign in?

If you used the phone number to sign in to Teams with multi factor authentication, so that you got a text message to your phone when you signed in, then it is possible to use the same number for multiple accounts.

If you used the phone number to call with, you will probably not be able to transfer it to another Teams organisation.

I used it for authentication only.
However, I can not now log in to my old account to remove the number.
When I contacted the accounts team they said once it is removed from the old account it will not be able to be added to a new one?
