I don't know whats going on here, but I'm pretty sure that participants should not be able to unumute themselves when I'm the meeting organizier, am I right?

What I've done

  • create Teams Meeting from Outlook
  • invite someone from my organization
  • open the meeting
  • mute the participant

the participant can just unmute themselves from their Teams UI.

I've also tried to iniate an ad-hoc meeting from a SRSv2 (Lenovo ThinkSmart Hub 500) to this participant and mute them, but again they could unmute themselves.

Am I missing something?

Nope, current design is to allow anyone to participate etc. At least that is what I've gathered. If you need control over the meeting and don't want others participating etc. then you use Live Events.

That's one of the things that make me think what Microsoft understands "feature parity" means ;)

Hi Ivan,

100% agree with Chris - whether you mute an individual or mute all they can always unmute in a meeting. If you want to see this functionality then I would recommend to raise a Uservoice here: https://microsoftteams.uservoice.com/forums/555103-public however, it is already achievable through Live Events.

You can find out about Live events here: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoftteams/teams-live-events/what-are-teams-live-events. These are meant for one-to-many communications where the host of the event is leading the interactions and audience participation is primarily to view the content shared by host. Examples are like seminars, lectures and business updates.

Microsoft Team Live Meeting replaces Skype for Business Broadcast.

Hope that helps.

It's even more fun once you realize what Guests can do... We have been bringing this to various folks at Microsoft for months now, seems they are unwilling to understand what the issue is.

I disagree. It is a very common situation in which someone, maybe the organizer mutes one or more participants because they are noisy. The muted party can then unmute themselves when they have something to say.

It's a function that works similar on most all platforms.

An meeting that has all listeners muted is a broadcast, not a conference/meeting.

All other platforms except SfB where we had very granular controls over who can join/talk/present, you mean?

@Vasil Michev The problem I have run into is if you are using a phone call in for the meeting and you mute the phone of a participent, NO ONE can unmute them! Not you as the organizer, not the participent, they are just muted now. If you click Mute All, now everyone who joins by phone is muted and there is no way to turn it off! I had to cancel a meeting and create a new one on the fly and invite everyone all over again, there was no way to get around the mute of their phones!

@vfighter if they dial *6 on their phone they will unmute, it's the same keys as most dial in conference services.

@vfighter did you not want an answer? Don't look at this page called Audio Conferencing Common Questions either then ...

Is there an 'un-mute all' option? I did not see this option. Is Microsoft thinking that un-muting all by organizer possible cause a privacy concern?

@Christopher Hoard some of my users are reporting on the mobile app, they cannot unmute, regardless of my actions as the organizer.  I want them to participate, its just a normal meeting, and they cannot unmute themselves.

@Eyuboglu you can't unmute someone else at all, but it's kind of obvious why.

@Ivan Unger

Bro i have been muted permanently and i cant unmute myself. The organizer said that she had given all the permission to chat. But the thing is I am not able to chat. I hope you would help me.

Chat or voice mute? If you can’t unmute then it sounds like you need to correct your microphone device by utilizing the devices menu in settings to select a device and do a test call. Once you get that working then you should be able to unmute at anytime assuming you are joining a meeting and not a live event.

@kolamass100_hii I think they should ban

muting

@Ivan Unger I dont think participants should unmute themselves because if they got muted the meeting organizer should say when they can be unmuted and then they can do it. There should be a mute lock.
