Excel documents I have uploaded to a teams channel are missing the ribbons and tabs. I have checked to make sure in Excel that they are selected to be shown. I have not been able to find a setting that would restrict them or cause them show. Without seeing the tabs at the bottom I can not change tabs. I have tried closing teams , force stop, and it still happens. The only thing I haven't really tried is to uninstall teams, then reinstall. I have also tried zooming out and it doesn't help. I am able to see the tabs from the phone up, but not on my desktop.

You wont see the Excel ribbon unless you are editing the document, hit the Edit in Teams button at the top.

Hi,
I have tried to look for and edit button at the top, but I didn't have one.
I went into edit in teams when I went into the file directly from the chat, but there is still no ribbon on the edit screen.
If you have any solutions to this issue, I will be most grateful.

I am replying to this solely to say that the same thing is happening to me and I cannot find anyone else reporting this issue, much less a solution. I can upload a Word doc into a chat thread and select "edit in Teams." However, when the document opens no editing ribbon appears at the top of the screen. When I first started using Teams a few weeks ago, it was definitely there. About one third of my small team report the same thing. The "open in browser" option allows editing, so that's what we're using. Any answer would be appreciated.

I just uploaded a basic Word doc to Files Tab in Teams. Not only is the Ribbon not visible, but the format with Tabs is also gone. So my Word doc, one of the oldest Office products, has basically become a Text doc when I uploaded it to Teams?
Are there MS people here that can confirm this is a known BUG and will be resolved shortly?
Thx

All the files I'm currently using are .docx. I'd really have to go back into the archives to find a .doc file that hasn't been converted.
Any thoughts on this? Am I just missing something? I've found some other posts, but nothing really answers the issue.

@PeteMc10 and if you go to the Files tab, then create a new file there ?

Haven't tried that, but it's not really the issue I'm trying to resolve....
I'd rather know if it's a BUG or some other issue where a MS Word.docx can be uploaded to the MS Teams Files section.

@Steven Collier You told someone above this: "You wont see the Excel ribbon unless you are editing the document, hit the Edit in Teams button at the top."
But that's not true. Someone attached an Excel file to a chat, and when I clicked on it, an editing ribbon showed up with it right within Teams. This function has stopped working for me with Word (docx) documents. When I open Word doc uploaded to a chat, a white stripe of nothing appears where the ribbon is in the pic below.

No ribbon even in Edit mode. And my header is a little misleading, but I didn't want people to think I was talking about the tabs you can put at the top of a Channel.
But regardless if I'm editing the document or not, why did the tab formatting disappear. My DOS fix was to use a Fixed Pitch font. Really??.......

@Anne90 I posted that previous message you refer to a year ago, then Teams would preview all documents first. The behaviour changed later in 2019 so all files opened in edit mode.

@Steven Collier It works perfectly fine here, see below. I was trying to see if the problem might be that your network etc was blocking the place that the Word web app comes from, in which case it wouldn't work for a new document, or if it was more likely there was something unusual about your local Word files. If you aren't interested I suggest you go raise a support request.

What works correctly for you? I don't see a Ribbon. I also don't see you tabbing any words.
Again... The question is why a Word.docx (Office365) loses it's tabs when you upload the document to the Teams File section? The document opens and looks just like what you're showing, but with my document, that look is incorrect.
Create a Word.docx with a few lines. Put a word on the left margin; a word at the 2" tab and a word at the 4" tab in each of the lines. Save the document and put it in Teams File. Tell me what you get.

@PeteMc10 This thread started about talking about the ribbon, the menus at the top of the screen, the tabs in the ribbon are the different sections, File, insert, Layout etc. You statement that you experience was this was "basically become a Text Doc" added weight to you not seeing that part of the screen.
You also seem to not to be able to see the ribbon, the bit at the top of the screen with all the controls. Maybe you are referring to the visual change that Word brought in 2 years ago see https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/blog/2018/06/13/power-and-simplicity-updates-to-the-of...
The web version of Word doesn't support Tab Stops, if that's what you mean, see https://support.office.com/en-gb/article/insert-or-add-tab-stops-06969e0f-2c81-4fe0-8df5-88f18087a8e...

Okay, so the comment that Word for the Web, which I've never used before, does not support Tabs would have been great to know off the top.
I should say I'm surprised that MS can't get it's act together with even the most basic things. But then I, nor many other people, really are. Looks like we're dumping MS for our project and going to Google Docs.
Thanks for finally clarifying.

This is what it looks like when I select "edit in Teams" to an uploaded word doc. When I click the "edit" button, it kicks us out of Teams to open the doc in the online version of Word. Just an extra step, but has been a little troublesome to those with slower computers. If this is how it supposed to work, fine. It just would be a nicer experience to edit within the Teams window. The "view only" message is new.

@Anne90 not sure if you still have this issue but I found that this was happening to me with old Word versions 97/2003 docs .. and when re-saved as a Word Document and then uploaded to MS Teams the Ribbon was back ..

Interesting. I'll try saving a Doc in the older format and see what happens.
Thanks for the tip!
