our pilot group is small (5 persons). 2 of the users show as signed from skype for business. users do not have skype for business client active or installed. users in question do not have assigned rights in the office protal for skype for business.

 

any idea how to correct this anomoly ?

Just to clarify -- What do you mean by "users show as signed in from skype for business"? I'm not clear if you mean that:
A) The Teams client indicates the users are signed in from Skype for Business, or that
B) When using teams these users appear to others as available in skype for business.

Option A) teams client indicats the users are signed in from skype for business. chat messages are not available.

 

we found a way to resolve:

 

1) download skype for business free version

2) sign in with organization account eg. foo.bar@contoso.com

3) sign out from skype for business

4) resign in to teams

 

Of Noteother team members will not get a update on these other users status until they restart the desktop client or sign in again for the web page.

I am seeing the same thing. When you send a message below the persons name it says "This person is currently using Skype for Business. Some Microsoft Teams features, including chat history wont be available"

In the Chat section, you search for a name (John Doe) and the default result takes you to their Skype for Business. In this case, John Doe is a brand new employee and hasn't even used SfB yet. So you start a chat and it goes nowhere. How do you make sure the default chat is MS Teams rather than SfB? Definitely a UX problem.

I'm seeing this issue as well. Both User A and User B are in Microsoft Teams, but both are receiving this message about the other user.

I agree this is a mess.  So I have team members signed in on both Skype and Teams and yet within Teams it only sees them from Skype.  So I can't favorite them.  And yet other folks it seemed to work.  I'm not sure if a person has to "post" in a channel once to get it to pick up or if there is some other event.  Any ideas?

It appears for my issue that in order to favorite someone, they need to have downloaded and signed into the desktop client.

There have been multiple threads on this exact topic and none of them have ever had a response from Microsoft. It's been sort of pathetic actually.

We're seeing this exact problem with some of our users. A colleague who I'm chatting to has the latest MS Teams desktop client installed, like me, and it's reporting that she's "currently using Skype for Business. Some Microsoft Teams features...." 

 

She's on a Office 365 Business Premium account, so does have Skype for Business enabled, but isn't logged in.

 

Can someone from Microsoft investigate this as it's clearly a bug?

So, it appears that if I search for the colleague within the "chat" feature I get their Skype for Business contact. Whereas if I locate them from within MS Teams threads, and click chat, it takes me to a different contact - a MS Teams specific version?

 

What's causing this?

One thing to check possibly. The Skype for Business mobile apps are notorious for leaving users signed in there, which often causes messages to attempt to route to that mobile app even though the user is not active there. This results in a form of undeliverable message back to the sender. Might be worth checking with your users and making sure that if they have the Skype for Business mobile apps installed that they are completely signed out of them.

We recently started using Teams for internal office communications, and discovered the following fix for this issue:

 

  • Click on your profile picture (bottom left)
  • Select Notifications
  • At the very bottom is an option 'Chat with Skype for Business' - Disable it

 

Every person has to do this. That solved it for us.

Does that actually disable the ability to chat with people who are only on skype for business?  If so, I think that fix might be a case of cutting off your nose to spite your face.

It does.  We're using Teams for internal communications only, so we don't need access to Skype.  If you need to be able to chat with Skype users, this solution won't work, obviously.  It's a shame the two services aren't better separated.

This fix seems to have worked for our organisation.

Correct, this work-around does 2 things:

  1. Disables that user's ability to communicate with SfB (from within Teams app)
  2. Permanently deletes all chat history with anyone it decided to communicate with via SfB rather than via Teams.

We found that 75% of conversations lost ALL chat history... as about half of all staff had connected with someone via SfB rather than their Teams account.

I think this is important to know, because even when you go: "worse-case, half my contact list defaulted to chatting to a SfB contact rather than via Teams"... but then you have to think: The people you successfully linked to via the correct contact, there is ALSO a 50% chance that THEIR install got it wrong, so *poof* suddenly that chat is completely gone too, despite it showing as correct on your installation. It seems that Teams just can't discern correctly between the 2 messaging services in this build.
