Hello,

Our company has been using Teams for some time now and we are gradually trying to move our clients towards it. We have however, had some issues with the default "file tab". With clients whom have existing SharePoint Sites with elaborate permissions created, we find the "file tab" to be confusing. Is there anyway to remove that? What has been some of your workarounds or ways to succesfully use the "Files Tab"? Thanks for all your feedback!

Cheers,

Anthony

Nope, can't be removed, I wish it was an option to do so or at least redirect them.

As for ideas. I would move my existing sites into the Teams SharePoint site, but seems that isn't an option for you so your best bet would be to make use of the "Cloud Storage" option. This will basically add a folder to your File tab that essentially is a virtual folder to your other library. So this is a good way to link another library into the existing tab.

The negative with this approach or any other approach in Teams is it has to be done per channel. So I usually do it in the general channel and people just know that's where they go to use the "Document Repository". They still use their channel files tabs, and I encourage it for collab. Then inform them to pop out to "Open in SharePoint" and use Move to. And move the files to the repository from there. Or they can use Teams as well if version history isn't needed.

Hopefully at some point MIcrosoft releases the Files tab replacement so it goes straight to SharePoint so the MoveTo command is accessible from within Teams but that seems to be heavily delayed for some reason and haven't heard anything on it lately.
Agree with Chris here.

Just a FYI Anthony to add to Chris's solution, the call for the default File Tab to be permitted to be renamed was rejected by MS

https://microsoftteams.uservoice.com/forums/555103-public/suggestions/17731678-make-it-possible-to-r...

And the call to hide the Files Tab hasn't been picked up after being raised in January

https://microsoftteams.uservoice.com/forums/555103-public/suggestions/33086557-redirect-files-tab-to...

Best, Chris
Voted for 2nd one, cause sometimes you just don't want people storing files for a channel, or have a single source of truth you want them using.

Anyway, another option that I've used as well is used ShareGate to Migrate my folder and permissions into channels to match the library to some degree, but not knowing use case, it might not be possible in this instance or make sense, but it is something i've used before.

I agree with this as well.  Microsoft please add option to disable certain tabs (e.g. files) from a channel.

Hi,
I know its frustrating but its a core tab for each channel's folder where it store files. I wont remove it nor hide it ... but RE NAME to something ... "Channal files" , "Contents" :)

Thanks,
Thuyavan

Was this picked up, resolution?

Hi! As you can see if you click the link, it has still not been picked up! Probably due to low vote count! Go and and make a vote and wish for the best :)

Same status on both I am afraid.

@AnthonyJoseph

What I have done to guide users on all the team groups, is to place a txt file in the General Folder with a file name: "Please use the Document Library Tab above.txt".

See attached image.

Thank you.

@AnthonyJoseph

I simply went into the Sharepoint behind the "Files" tab, noticed it was based on the "General" folder. Went up one file directory and deleted the "General" folder. Now users simply get an error message. Intuitively they will be angry seeing an error message, but they will also defer to the "Document Library" out of frustration.

As far as I'm concerned, the frustration is not on me. It's on Microsoft.

Solution
You can change the permissions for members of a team on just the general channel folder to prevent files from being added. This would Probabaly be an easier work around than having it error.

@Chris Webb

I see this post is a few months old. Has the permission option changed or is there a special way that I'm not seeing to edit permissions for the 'Files' tab?

@Thuyavan Ganesan

I would just be happy if I could move it to the end, or to the right.

Unless MS Teams allows using existing Sharepoint Sites for a new Team, I see no advantage to create a new Site and force members to use it - this creates duplication of file repositories.

I want a way to either:

- Hide Files from tab

- Create a Team out of an existing Sharepoint site OR

- Link Team to existing SP site

@Chris Webb I hope all has been well! Funny that I am still recieving updates on this post 2 years later. With that being said, it is still relevant. I still find myself wondering if there could ever be a setting implemented that allows the removal of the "Files" option. I still see this as an obstacle for some customers when it comes to adoption of the platform. For people used to using Windows Explorer or even the SharePoint Portal, the files tab opens the door to confusion. Although I believe it is a wonderful feature and integrates the solution, the creation of the files tab along with the "new SharePoint site" every time a new Team is created can cause pandemonium with clients. What has your experience been since we last spoke? All the best!

@AnthonyJoseph What I seem to have settled on is the fact you can add cloud storage (the sharepoint document library) into files so it appears as the only folder but linked. Then I create a text in root saying all files must be stored in the folder. still not ideal.

We have restricted our domain on the Sharepoint level of preventing all files from being accessed outside of our org. Required by a client audit. Since Sharepoint is the backbone repository for Teams, it makes the File tab useless when we have a Team with external guests. We try to tell our internal users to stop dropping files in the Files tab because our clients can't see the items. Would love to have the option to "hide" the tab or move far to the right.

@joeymorrow
I tried your method. Deleting channel folders from within SharePoint is a very temporary solution. After I did that for a channel, when I went to the Files tab, I get this error.

Since there is a Retry button there, of course I clicked it. When I do that, it recreates the top-level folder for the channel both in Teams and SharePoint, such that when I go back to the Files tab, it looks normal again. It's not restoring the deleted folder, though. I put a file into the folder, deleted the folder. When the folder was created anew, the file was not in it. So, if this worked in 2019 when you posted this, I guess Microsoft "fixed" it.
