Is there an easier way to set permissions in MS Teams?  After you've configured the team, added 3 or more channels

there doesn't appear to be a way to give individual permissions.

  1.  Permissions per channel
  2.  Permissions per file or folder

By clicking on "Open in sharepoint you get this option"

STOP SHARING?

We will disable any guest links and remove all users from the file except you and any other owners.

Hi Henry, Microsoft Teams doesn't yet have those settings by individual or by channel. You can manage individual file permissions through the advanced controls in the SharePoint client (click on the . . . next to the channel name when in the Files tab )

Hi Elaine,

Is this something you are working on - better control over permissions in Teams?

Not only to have separate permissions per channel, but also one more permission level i.e. a Read only level?

Any news on this? We really need this function in our team to be able to deny members of a team the possibility to delete files!

You can modify the permissions in SharePoint and they will be respected in Teams.

Thanks Steven,

I tried to find where to do it, but I can't find it anywhere - I am not the owner of the team, however I have uploaded the folder with all our files in them.

In the Team site choose the Cog and Site permissions. You'll see here that I changed Team Members to have Read access only ...

Would like to request the same: control of permissions down to the File level in Teams. Critical of our business. Can you tell us when this will be available?

Well, it is working. However, if you restrict the permissions to read for example, the buttons 'New', 'Delete', 'Move'... remain visible in the 'Files' tab.

The expected behavior is that they should be hidden.

Moreover, when the user clicks on 'Delete', for example, he gets this very explicit error message:

2018-01-26_12h50_17.png

How do you deal with it?

I'm not aware of any way to avoid this creating issues in the Teams UI.

It's generally a bad idea to start changing the default permissions in group sites, we certainly don't do it at my organisation. Teams are about people working together, it you need to limit people you probably need more Teams rather than special permissions.

Steven, changing the default permissions in a corporate / organisation environment may well be a really bad idea.  For better or worse, Microsoft got rid of Classroom in favour of teams and in a school environment, being able to prevent students from deleted (or adding) material into the Files area is something that I'd like to be able to do.  At the moment the default behaviour is not working for my classes :(

Thanks for this tip Steven! We were in need of this exact type of fix to ensure that sensitive wiki info is not able to be changed or deleted by others. We will try this out today.

Hi,

I have the same problem, where and how I can reach settings panel to modify permissions to use files for my MS Team group (I am owner of the group)? Do I need to ask any permissions from global admin?

I've figure out a bit of a workaround for having granular permissions within Teams

Hi, can you please show me how to do this as I cannot see this in teams and we are using our team so share but also store important information that should not be deleted.

In files - click on go to SharePoint. Find the library in site contents and apply permissions according to the LinkedIn link above!

Adam

If you're referring to trying to do the steps in my LinkedIn article, PM me and I can set up a skype call and screen sharing to show you.

Read-only access is not that special.  Teams is about collaborating but why can't it also be about broadcasting information, but allowing people to comment on the information without deleting it.

As stated, within SharePoint you can have allt of granulat permissions. But for teams itself, conversations and so on, it’s quite less you can do! Either have public teams where people can join and change the members permissions for everybody or just trust that people don’t delete stuff! There is always auditing and restore functions! Otherwise create a different public team where people can broadcast information and everyone can join in and discuss
Different teams can have channels in this team where they publish documents for discussion and so on!
Teams will probably never fit every scenario but there are usually workarounds that somewhat works

  1. Microsoft chose to integrate teams with Planner, SharePoint, Azure etc for ease of use AND uniformity.  Permissions function more reliably and are far easier to maintain and support when they are uniform.  Exceptions to permissions get confusing and quite frankly cause unnecessary restrictions and maintenance.
  2. Microsoft gave us only two options for permissions Owner (Full control) or Member (edit).  Why is READ access only solved as a work around? Granting READ access has ALWAYS been an option in any app I've ever used.   By integrating these tools and unifying them under a single O365 group Microsoft definitely made it easy to control access across the ecosystem or suite of tools, but it's too limited as evidenced by this very discussion and the fact that it's not just TEAMS that is affected.  For example, there are dozens of requests in the Planner User Voice for similar permissions settings.   In the SharePoint User Voice there are thousands of admins like myself complaining about the lack of functionality around governance, permissions, and administration of the tool set.  I think Microsoft needs to address this soon.
  3. Trust can not recover data that was accidentally erased let alone stop malicious intent.  More importantly, it is already a given that if it's the latter of those two that we're trying to stop we have far greater issues to address then permissions.  But to address your point, auditing and restore functions only works in SharePoint I don't see any functionality to restore content in Planner, or Wiki or TEAMS channels.  If this ability is there, then Microsoft's documentation is sourly lacking... again.
  4. Public channels just make it so everyone can become a member and edit all your tabs (WIKI, Planner, etc.)  We're asking for the ability to broadcast plans and files and wikis but having the simple ability to control who that broadcast is going to and who can contribute using the same permissions functionality that the toolset offers.... a single O365 group.  I don't see why that's too much to ask or expect to have in any web tool.  We have that ability in Trello and Slack.  Yikes.
First off, I do get you!
MS main goal with teams is that it will be used for teamwork, communication, and collaboration, all within teams among all team members! And to do this simple!
Microsoft has addressed the broadcasting in other tools like just Sharepoint, a communication site for example and Yammer for communication based not on a sole “team”
It does sound like you could use a communication site instead where this team can broadcast and share what people need to see! Then having the members of the team have their teams internal stuff for themselves! Documents could in in drafts and worked on and shouldn’t be used til finished and moved to the comm site for example!
I know this doesn’t do what you want but I guess you have to find ways around, making it work for you and the organization

Whilst some member of a team could be uploading and working on documents, other members might only need read access. In the case of a large volume of work, giving access to too many people could ultimately lead to someone with malintent deleting files. We had an incident in our company recently, where someone that was fired deliberately deleted a lot of files that went unnoticed for some time. Read only permission gives a lot more confidence to contributors to a channel to share the channel with a wider audience.

@Elaine Ansell

I have created a team and I have added several channels and I have a wiki on each channel. I need to be able to not allow members to edit or delete wikis or any content from a wiki. How do I do this?

@Bruce_Bartlam thanks for your question.  @Luis Carrasco , can you help answer Bruce's question?
